Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

Thank goodness for modern communication. We really are lucky to be able to hear from our kids! "Old school" would have me in a padded room! lol

Just heard from MA Chris. Says they are on alert, but not expecting trouble. He's off this weekend keeping busy with computer games, PT & messing in one of the two pools on base. Says a group plays a version of water polo with a pool brick?! He sounded great, not stressed at all. So comforting to hear his voice & that goofy laugh I so love.

Praying for the Navy and Marines tonight...spoke to my son too.....he sounded good but I felt like there was a hesitation to his voice....of course I have been tuned in to Cnn all day and BBC so I might just be panicky...my brain keeps telling me they are safe and well protected....my heart .... well thats another matter all in itself.  Good night moms...God Bless our Sailors and Marines

Prayers to the ppl of Bahrain.. my love is there on base and I am just worrying like crazy...  as time goes by the news seems to be getting worse.. Hilary Clinton addressed the King to stop the killings...  I just hope it doesnt get worse.. heard they are targeting the US for the uprisings.. I pray to God nothing happens.. I was informed there is a ship keeping watch if anything does happen..   I'm just so worried!!!

Leta-has he ridden before? If not, he needs a class to start out. My Chris did it for us, his Dad has been a rider for 45 years. Please urge him not to get too powerful a bike for his expertise.

Just got in a quick skype with the boy...it was his birthday yesterday.  He turned twenty.  He too said that our base is not the taget and that the protests today were suppossedly peaceful.  I am not worried about what is going on now but I have to be honest....I think there is going to be trouble a brewing.  I just try to stay up on the news...check out the BBC as much as possible and listen to NPR.  I also have searched newspaper articles on line trying to get all the perspectives.  I teach high school social studies and the kids are very interested in Egypt and other news right now...but the more I read the worse I feel..my son said "MOM there is a real easy solution for that .. STOP reading and researching"  I had to laugh..he sounded just like his father.  Hope all of you are having a decent week...keeping the boys and girls in my prayers as always and us moms too!!!

MA Chris confirms the base is not a target. He sounded unstressed, doing the job. He laughed at the "minute to win it" games I sent for he & the bunch! Thought they could use some fun. Thin Mints for his next box! Thanks everyone for info & support. My gel nails are holding up, but the cuticles & knuckles are a mess!

Hello Bahrain Moms! Havent been on here in a while, my son left in July and is in Sicily now. After seeing about the protests over there I wanted to check in and give support. We will keep the Manama Sailors in our prayers and hope this will resolve soon and safely. Sicily is on alert also due to the people fleeing Tunisia but all is peaceful as of yet.

The protests are suppossed to be peaceful.  You can find the protesters call to rise on facebook.  Search Bahrain in friend search area and you will find a site with posters and other propaganda.  It is not anti-western or religiously motivated.  The youth want a bigger voice in government...want to feel safe saying what is on their mind.  Shia are in the majority there but the Sunni are in control.  There is suppossed to be gathering and protesting near the malls.  As far as I could make out are out of the way on the base...I have a feeling that they will not be out shopping and such tomorrow! Keeping our kids in my prayers.  Check out the United Kingdom State Department travel advisory...tells us a bit more about issues there.  UK has put out travel advise to their people but no warning or special instructions as of today.
