Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

thanks, now realize "thing". Dog poo huh! Really a yuck. Now I know why my MA was soooo thrilled. BTW, I cheat on the time thing. Got a time zone thingy on my phone that calculates the time. I can drive myself crazy to easily now! Glad for your contact with the sailors. Fair winds, following seas, no more dog poo or icky drunks.

My, closed-mouthed,MA said he'd call for a Skype birthday toast, soon after "something", of which I am truly clueless, duh. I've got to get to a doctor for some anti-nosey meds, being clueless drives me nutty(er)!!!!! LOL!

Donna- sniff & sip, sounds like a plan! Thanks for all the BD wishes, I'll pass them along! I, too, will add N4Ms to my "What I'm thankful for" list this year.

We just have to know that what we taught them growing up is in their hearts & minds, they are on their own but our voices are whispering in their conscience. Loving & guiding, sometimes pushing (just a smidge)! BTW, Chris says, "real, hold in your hand letters are like "the Grail" to our sailors. Write one once in a while, they love 'em. Off to work, y'all be care out there while I'm gone!

Good gravy! I go to work & all sorts of good things go on without me! So glad your guy gave you some piece of mind!
MA Chris called. I got in trouble try to reach him yesterday to let him know 'bout his cake. His higher up understood about it, thankfully. Said he had some tests today & a "board" whatever that is. Sounded serious, but my "Gary Cooper" guy wouldn't or couldn't explain. Jeez, bit I'm nosey.
Gift idea - he commented again how much he likes his Melita drip coffee mug set up! Calm seas, steady breezes y'all.

Welcome Matt!
There is light at the end of one of my tunnels! I have pulled off one of my best "mommie miracles"! I, yes me, have gotten an ice cream cake at the NEX Baskin Robbins for Chris's 21st BD! It took a few days, several emails, and a credit card. Surprised the heck out of the MASA! Got a phone call out of it too! With his shift he won't get it till tomorrow, but a BD cake he will have! OooRah!

I've had luck emailing the NEX. Am in the process of, trying, to arrange a 21st BD cake through Baskin Robbins! They were prompt answering my email, answering questions. Now I'm hoping that my request can be done, the time difference is a bit of a hinderance! I went to the Bahrain NEX site, on the site they also list phone & fax numbers for various vendors! I was told the gift card amounts may get converted if the vendor is off base. I also got Chris an XBox Live gift card for time to play. His friends here at a local shop where the guys/girls can buy & play cards & board games, got together & sent him various board games & made up a RISK game from vintage pieces! They spent many a night trying to rule the world!!!! I thought that was too cool. I've been sending him Starbucks instant flavored coffees as a treat, also hacky sac, Dove for Men soap for dry skin, eye lubricating drops, toothbrushes/t. paste. Little stuff, you know, to just help out. Am trying to figure out how to send homemade enchiladas to him!
