Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

MA Chris is in dorm-like housing with a roommate. When we talk on the phone the sounds & conversations in the background sound very familiar, like a college dorm!

Our Chris wasn't loving college, hated, as he put it, throwing our $ away. Turns out he likes what he's doing, feels like he's making a difference. Hope he continues with those feelings. He did do the Navy college savings plan!

Brrrrrrrr! It's mentioned that our "sand sailors" will be cold even in Summer here in the States until they acclaimate. Ours was cold here in NC anyhow, no fat on him, except maybe 'tween his ears, lol.

Leta, go to wunderground.com or weatherbug. com set preference for city/country & you can get updates on their status. The iPhone has apps for weather as fo many smart phones! Hope this can help!

Hi! Donna. I love sending pkgs too. I'm putting the final touches on a coffee themed one today. MA Chris was saying he can't get a coffee while getting reading for early duty (02:00). I found a single serve mug drip coffee setup by Melita. He can heat water in the microwave, load ground coffee in the drip cup & poof! Coffee! I'm sending that, fiters, measurer, coffee, little creamers, & vanilla sugar (homemade), I hope he likes it, I had a ball hunting down the stuff!

MommaBecky - Woman you're my eye makeup's worst enemy! Got teary-eyed reading your post & now look like an embattled racoon!! Stockings, what a wonderful thing for someone to do. Chris won't Skype with us, I think he's concerned about keeping himself pulled together. We won't hear from him for a couple weeks & then he'll call & talk for an hour or more. His voice always seems to catch when we finally have to say goodbye. I soon be tree hunting, thanks for the tips!

I learn something new everyday I come onto the site. Thanks so much! The little Xmas tree idea is wonderful, Stockings would be cool too! I recently got a catalog from Oriental Trading that had tons of cute stuff. You can access them online also! They may even ship direct to an FPO, haven't tried yet, new at this!

Donna - In earlier posts I learned that cookies travel well when wrapped in plastic wrap & packed in Pringles cans! Haven't taken a shot at it yet, but it makes sense! Take a stroll back into earlier post for the infamous "cake in a jar" recipes. I also caught one for pie in a jar on "Mollie's" group page (with photos)! Looked good.

OMG! A soul mate. . . at my age confusion, forgetting & just plain not knowing are my best "things"! Just nailed down, yea, a color appt with my stylist, the grey thing is another best. Have gotten real good at rocking them with the help of my "sand sailor." He's the gift that just keeps giving! We asked for a POA but the guy never got it done. I'll have to ASK again! Oh, btw just saw some cute themed ideas for packages for the kids. Sorry if these are a rehash for you all but. . . movie nites - DVD's, micro p-corn, theater candies, favorite meals - ingredients for assembly, snacks they love. I was wondering if I made up MA Chris's fav enchiladas & vac packed them with cheese & sauce would they make it OK & not make him sick?! Almost Girl Scout Cookie time, wonder how Thin Mints travel. . . What'cha think?

Oh, thanks for that boost of confidence. I'm just at the, almost beginning, seven months now, of our Navy adventure. Now I know that my original catch phrase using "adventure" wasn't overstated!!!! The confused part. . . I've got that one down!! So happy I've got you all to help me keep my head in the game! Showing my ignorance, Deborah E - what's a POA? I've been with 4th graders all day & the brain is gone!
