Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

MADre- I'm in the Chicago area. Where is your son now?

Comment by GloriaC on December 17, 2013 at 5:49pm

MADre- We have T-Mobile. T-Mobile just added unlimited text and data to ALMOST everywhere in the world. It's been a blessing! He can get of facebook, Skype and text as much as he wants. T-Mobile also gives a 15% discount to military - he just has to show his military id.

hi GloriaC. My son is scheduled to deploy in January Bahrain. What service is your son using? We both have Sprint.

Hi everyone! Just joined the group! My son has been in Bahrain for just over a week. Love that we can text! The time difference isn't really even that big of a deal! Although I know he is far away, when we text, it still feels like he's in San Diego! LOL

YES!!! American w/d is so important or he could literally be washing for 3-4 hours! And he can ask for transformers too. We got several just in case and use them for any American appliances we brought from home or that you might ship at some point- kitchen, TV, hubby's Xbox, hairdryer, etc.

Thank you again,I'll tell him about OSN...I told him to ask for an american washer/ dryer machine, the info he has said that, that he can ask for it...He likes swimming and I know he would like an apt with a gym...He has not contact me today?/!! he should be out, there is 6:40pm...

mother_always lol, yes then, your son should be just fine. Encourage him to look at MANY properties out here before deciding. The real estate here is ENDLESS and he should really make sure he has every comfort away from home- convenience to base, great security, and if he has hobbies like swimming, pool table or working out etc He should make sure the place he accepts offers everything to keep him occupied and his spirits high! The command tells you to see at least 12 places and I agree- our place is AMAZING with only looking at 6 places- but I now know it could have been even better because these landlords really want our business (we pay way more than the locals). And I can't help but be curious! Even if the only thing important to him is gaming, internet, cable- he should make sure he gets the best package or he could end up with a bad connection or a bunch of Arabic channels. For example we have OSN cable which does offer about 12 english speaking channels- but OSN HD offers lots of shows currently playing stateside. I hope that helps.

Hello all! I wanted to take a moment and just truly thank each and every one of you for the continued support of all our Sailors as well as the encouraging words and uplifting comments in this group. Although I am a spouse, I continue to follow this group because there is so much love here!!

I know that there are several MCM crew family members here. I wanted to mention that all crews do have ombudsmen that have email lists, newsletters(for most) and are there to support the families in any way possible. I am currently the outgoing ombudsman for my husbands command which is Crew BULWARK and we do have a email list that your sailor can add you to. Communications between the command and family members/friends are sent out from that list. You can also request to be added yourself (if not already) at: bulwarkomb@gmail.com. There is a process verifying you but once approved you will get information from the command and also any BULWARK specific questions can be answered there(within guidelines of OPSEC). Your Sailor must approve you being added to the list as well as the command leadership but once that is done you are good to go!

Also if there are any other MCM families out there that have not gotten in touch with your sailors command ombudsman feel free to email me and I will forward the email to their ombudsman to get you added to their list. MCM crews are a small, tight knit group and the commands seem to really try their best to keep communication open with the families.

Also anyone who is not an MCM family member please remember that the Navy does REQUIRE all commands to have a family ombudsman so I encourage you to try and connect with them!

Again, thanks for the encouraging words that continue to be shared here, all of you are wonderful!
