Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

One of my husband's friends said, when SS was born,, "you know, one day he'll break her heart." It ain't broke, just got lots & lots of cracks! I do love the little bugger sooooooo.

Chriscwick, what awesome coins! I need  crow bar to get Chris's mouth open to say much of anything! LOL I scan the 5th Fleet FB page also. There have been NO pics of Chris's ship  and he has sent me NO pics of himself; only his apt which I'm thankful for but I want to see his face! He did take a pic of his hand holding a large piece of ammo and that was the most exciting pic yet!

OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG!!!!!!!! I do, I do, I do LOVE IT! Who knew they had immortalized my "secret squirrel"?!

Concernedad - YOU are an outrageous guy! Where on Earth did you find it? How cool is that coin?! Thank you for thinking of me, you're a doll.

ChrisyDVM - in case you hadn't seen prior posts; my Chris personifies OPSEC & PERSEC & embodies the essence of the secret squirrel. We consider The Sphinx to be a blabber mouth compared to SS. I told him I'd been scouring the 5th Fleet FB page hunting pics of he &/or his pups. He winked & said he takes unmitigated glee is avoiding photo ops. He said if I ever get a pic, not from him, it would be one that he was ordered to stand for. Like a Frocking & such. Just to ding him I showed him a pic of an MA butt that looked an awful lot like his, he got the giggles, gave me a hug & told me not since the 21st BD ice cream cake in the sandbox had he been that surprised. Guess it was his keister after all.

Paces - Alex anxiety attacks have lessened. SS is fitting into his new command. With the shutdown he's glad to be off base, but a refresher MA class got cut. He said his recert for OC wasn't bad at all compared to the first 2 times. Bleah! No word of if he & his pup certified. I guess I check with the GF, or as we call her " the informant"!

Been so busy this week, I haven't had a chance to even visit. Nancy Cooper you are so right. It is important to focus on the positive of what our kids are doing. They don't want us to stop our lives. J wants to know everything we are doing and when I tell him we haven't really done anything, he seems disappointed. He is moving on with what he does everyday and we are so proud of him. As a teacher, I get to let my students write letters to our service men and women, especially during the holidays. That gets others involved as well. Thank you so much for your wise words. Welcome B-Ready.

I wish for each of you a great week and weekend. Right now, I am just praying for some rest. We have worked and will have worked 4 13 hour days this week.We should be able to leave on time tomorrow, but who knows.  It is hard to believe, but that is becoming the norm for education lately.

ChrisyDVM, I am so glad you have the support. Even in your busy practice, you can pick something you do in your Lind day to stop even for a moment and be mindful in a happy positive way. (not in a worried way). For instants each day when you come across one of the many liberities that we enjoy, you can silently say to yourself ---"this is possible because of my sons service to our country." tiny joyful tributes. I find it so helpful. And I find, I am Always, astounded as to how many things we enjoy because of our rights we have under our mighty flag!

Nancy Cooper's Mom, wise words. Wise words; it's a let go and let God situation. There is a reason for the extra pay which these young ones like so well; that's the reality of it all. I work in a very busy stressful practice 40-60 hrs/week but he is never far from my thoughts and many of my coworkers and clients keep him in their prayers as does my family and my church; so he is definitely prayed up! :)

B-Ready, welcome to the group!

ChrisyDVM- the Sailor's are in a very good deployment in Bahrain. Many times in prayer we are totally in the dark. In this case we know first we have a power Military who have trained our Sailors for anything. Secondly, yet first we have a shared faith. Take complele comfort in your prayers. This is 100 % out of our control. Yes, there is an element of danger. There is always danger- even when they were children crossing the street. This is a highly protected fleet. Training daily for things that have never happened in the 19 months my Sailor has been there. So trust your faith. Trust the Navy. Do not burden yourself with what ifs. Enjoy your days as he furthers his career. These service men and women don't want their families in freeze frame while they are away. They are there and everywhere to assure us our freedoms. Celebrate that! Find a new hobby or service project an hour or so a week that will celebrate his service to our Nation. You would love that- so would he!!

Paces, I know what you mean. I'm a detail person and the more details I know, the better I feel and I like to be able to pray about specifics. I understand OPSEC and all but I'd rather know what I'm allowed to know so I don't feel like I'm in the total dark! I just found out mine is out to sea this morning; don't know where, why or for how long :( God speed to all our sailors.
