Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

I knew I wasn't the only one who had this stress and I guess as military families we want to deny as much as we can, but when the realization hits you, it won't be denied anymore. Prayer and faith are truly the only things that get us through each day. He didn't say much about what his day to day was like, but did let us know that it was extremely dangerous. More so than he led us to believe through our emails and phone chats (though, few and far between). They don't want us to worry, I get that. But, sometimes I would rather know than not.

I wish for everyone a safe and happy Monday. Back to the routine.

Paces, I know I was stressed when Chris was deployed in the Med Sea 2 years ago. I was so ecstatic to meet his plane in Norfolk and felt such a burden lifted. Now that he's stationed in Bahrain I feel that same heaviness and I pray w/o ceasing! I know that God will take care of him but I sure wish he was state side. As moms, it's hard not to worry and wonder...especially when mine doesn't communicate much!

Paces - I know we don't give ourselves credit for the worry & stresses we have as military families. As Chris's exit date neared Al's sleep pattern started being erratic. Then, after we heard that Chris was on US soil & told us he was wanting to be deployed he began having panic attacks. He has never outwardly worried. We figured that he had something like PTSD when Chris got out of the sand & could finally let down. Then the deployment news ramped him back up.

Good morning, everyone. It has been a while. Our sailor went back on Aug 25. Received an email that he arrived safe and sound. He also said he would be starting nights and he was really glad about that.

Chriscwick...I didn't realize how stressed I was until he walked up the ramp from the plane. It was like I huge boulder was lifted off my shoulders when I saw him. Not as stressed this time, though, I don't think. We can see the end of the tunnel. He will be re-assigned in July. It seemed so far away just a few months ago and now it seems like it will be just around the corner. I can hardly believe it is already October.

Welcome to all the new members. This is a great group.

I send all my packages through a "Mail and More" office. They take care of everything, (packing it, customs papers, etc). It costs about $5.00 more for large packages, but it is worth it to me. I was able to send his euphonium to him for less than $100. They send it USPS.

Thanks to all for the information! I will wait until I receive an address... Hopefully in time to make a holiday mailing. I understand that FedEx also ships to FPO addresses...in a pinch may have to rely on them! Thanks!

Always use their FPO otherwise there is too much mystery involved. Remember you should be getting a small break on the fee when you use the Military If It Fits, It Ships boxes, it isn't much, but it's something! My Chris had an address pretty quick. Keep checking with your sailor. We used the FPO even when he lived off base. I didn't want his mail getting into the local system. Was afraid of tampering & theft. I could also put the Kennel address for him if I wanted. The "pack" looks out for one another.

For fun, I sent a card to my daughter's flat.  It took a little over a month to get there

Comment by Newsubmom on September 26, 2013 at 6:35am
So based on what everyone is saying use US Post office and ship to the FPO address.... Has anyone sent something before their son or daughter sent them a specific address?
Comment by teeny on September 25, 2013 at 11:16pm

I use the boxes from post office that no matter how much it neighbors ships for 15.00.  He usually gets it in a bout 4 days.  They give you a tracking number so you can see when he gets it
