Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

I just talked with my son who lives on base and he tells me they have no mess hall?? I asked him if he had a kitchen to cook in and he said none that he knows of. He has only been there a week and a half can anyone tell me what other sailors are doing for meals?

There are pets. The base vet, who is wonderful, can care for them. My Chris, who was a MWD Handler there, wasn't very happy with treatment, by the Bahraini, of animals. His Jennifer, also MA, but not a handler, said most animals are badly cared for. She was appalled when she visited the camel area. Unless a local animal is adopted I wouldn't bring one there. Ask a family member so someone trusted to keep them for you. Also, the MWDs are surgically enhanced by making a third attachment point for the stomach to curtail what we call torsion, a flipping or binding of the digestive tract. There is another name, but it escapes me. We lost our Georgia to it here in the states. It can be caused simply by drinking cool water which will cause the binding. Sort of like us when we're very hot & drink cold water. This information is what I believe to be accurate. You may want to check further with your mentor/liaison/sponsor.

We received a call from our sailor last night and were told that while Americans may not be liked, they are tolerated and nothing scarier than a mangy pack of dogs has been seen between the base and the apartment. Animals are not cared for there as they are here. (we are dog lovers). Many locals are afraid of dogs according to our sailor. Christie, I know there are working canines there, but I do not know how it works with pets. When my service dog flies with me, I keep proof of his Rabies titer with me and the airline requires a physical prior to our flights. Some areas have quarantines and it gets complicated. Dept of Agriculture is helpful with forms for USA......   have you found out if your dogs are allowed?

I have Question for none who may know the answer. We will be moving to bahrain and I was wanting to know what happens with our dogs?

My Chris wanted enchiladas, of all things! I sent all the non perishable items along with the recipe & a box of our favorite easy flan mix. I even included an aluminum pan set with covers for leftovers. he got a kick out of it. Also, am putting together a cook book of family favorites as part of his Christmas this year.
You could can, like home canning, the soup, but pack it really well & tight. Packages sometimes take a beating.
Don't know if dry ice is overseas OK to keep freezey stuff. I wouldn't.
Cookies send really well; wrap individually in Saran. Then, place in a Pringles can.
As to the drinks, welllll... My friend used to send Cheerwine soda to her Marine on Okinowa! Nobody gave her grief for it.
You may want to check out the Care Packages Mom group here on N4Ms. They have some great ideas!

Aileen, I'm in California and I have sent my son homemade cookies and whole coffee beans in his care packages. It usually takes a week to get there. I put the a few cookies in small Ziploc bags and then put those in a plastic container I get from Target. That way it stays fresh and don't get broken. This last package actually took longer to get to him because of an address change, but everything was still in good shape. You have to fill out some forms at the shipping location detailing the contents, but otherwise it gets there fine. My son did instruct me not to reference Bahrain on the package so it doesn't end up in the Bahrain mail system.

Received an email from ours today as well. It has been about two weeks or more since we heard from him.

Comment by paces on August 16, 2013 at 3:58pm

aileen...We are in Georgia and it takes about 14 days to ship anything to him. I am not a good one to ask about food items. I did send him some apple juice and cider mix at Christmas and it shipped well. Can't remember who, but they sent a specific soda their sailor liked and it did not explode in shipping. It was carbonated. Our son said he can get pretty much what he wants, but he has sent a few requests for things.

Got a 2 sentence email from my son today also saying he was fine and "no issues here"! LOL Still praying a hedge of protection around him and being thankful he let me know he's ok! PTL
