Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

Chris has told us that at times like these the MAs may be on duty "Port to Starboard", long days in a long row. Paces son & mine are very OPSEC minded. He's had some "fun" stories to let slip, but didn't feel in danger for the most part. He has said that Command is very clear about where folks should & shouldn't be. Jen showed me a FB page Bahrain Security Forces, which are the locals. She laughs at the language, they try to be rough - tough! Photos are kinda creepy though.

FL GATOR.... Our son called today about his upcoming trip home, but did not mention anything about what we are reading online and in the papers. I didn't know anything about the news until after he had called. Of course our son is much like chriscwick's secret squirrel. He doesn't share much because he doesn't want us to worry. Even when I ask, he is reluctant to share.

Hi ladies! Been basking in having size 12s in the house! We've also had Jen with us. House is full again, loving it! Our time is coming to an end Sunday, as Chris will be on his way west & on to his next adventure. Got the car changed into his name after an exciting day of government screw-ups & misinformation! Al & he had a great day together. The kids traveled to FL to visit my 91 yr old dad & his girlfriend. They had a nice visit, my Dad just wanted eyes & hands on the guy!

Secret Squirrel has spoken of some of his adventures. Sort of glad now he didn't share then! He misses his buddy, Vvillian. Said that his new Handler has an awesome bomb dog to get to know! Chris was ready to shake the sand from his shoes!

We suspended his cell here in the States. He picked up a local "pay as you go" cell in the sand. The last year he had an iPhone which he enjoyed. He now has a new number for the States & got another iPhone. His, in the sand, sponsor was helpful. He is already in contact with his new sponsor. These folks have been great.

Lady H limbering up for ya!

Hi, I haven't been on in a while. I can't not recall who was asking about the best ways for communication? Someone who's son is goi g in Aug? My Sailor does have an iPhone. We suspended his phone and calling package here. They will do that for Military easily. He bought a new separate IPhone just for there. He was able to get an extremely affordable I ternational calling package once on the base in Bahrain. I believe his roommate or Sponsor helped with that? (he has been there 20 months now. The magic jacks do work from base. Your sailor won't immediately have his Internet so that wouldn't work immediately either. Our experience was that some within hours of our Sailor arriving let him phone us via their phone. our Sailor is (was) somewhat shy so I have to assume the other party offered? We have easy access to speaking with him. He says it is still very very affordable. Your son's sponsor will know how to help. Our has loved his time in Bahrain. We too, feel it is safe (as it can be) and all of the sailors have been wonderful to our son. Best of luck. Perhaps make a list in advance of you Sailors departure of things to immediately ask sponsor?

I am not sure what my son uses, but I do know that it is not his IPhone. We have suspended his IPhone until he returns home. You can do that by presenting his military orders at the store where it was purchased. chriscwick and ladyhamilton can better answer the communication questions. Good luck to your sailors. I will be praying for them and you. Just a few more weeks and we will have ours home for a few days. Then he will return back to the sand for at least another year.

chriscwick...Are you ready to do the happy dance?

My son just sent us a couple of pictures from his apartment window. They sure are doing a lot of building in Bahrain. Lots of high rises half built on the horizon. At least I HOPE they are half built and not half falling down! :)

For some reason, I feel more secure about my sailor being in Bahrain than I did when he lived back East. He watches where he goes and follows the rules.

Hello,

My son will arrive in Bahrain on August 14th on the Nimitz and anyone's in-put would be a huge help for me.
