Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

I've only had a couple things misplaced during our three years. Be sure to use the exact military address. DO NOT put the word "Bahrain" anywhere on the package, as it may go out into the Bahraini system, never to be seen again.
Ladies, isn't there a list somewhere of what can & can't be mailed? See Mail #2 above. After mail gets to the jumping off point here in the States & the NAVY gets charge of it, well...

How's the mail service over there? We need to send our son his passport and I fear it will vanish. What would be the best way to send it?

The GF will be on the right coast. We hope to get to meet her in person soon. Paper pushers in the sand messed up her MAC flight last week. As she stood on the Tarmac she learned the next fun thing. The paper pushers also gave her bunk away too! With no room on base with all the newbies arriving she's camping out with Chris at his flat. Plus, she has to muster out twice daily! Hope her flight this week gets her in for her report by date. At least they got another week together.

Think it'll be tough on Chris having so many goodbyes to make. Bet Villian will be missing him something fierce. Chris was his first Daddy. Hope his new handler loves him up good.

Welcome aboard to our new members! This group of ladies have made my three years here so much easier, hope you find that to be true also! I've explored other sites & without a doubt, this one is nicest. I'd like to keep an eye on you all, if I may. It would seem wierd without y'all.

My "only" enlisted & was in the sand in a matter of 4 months. Hit his dad & myself hard. Our "empty nest" was desolate. We, still, don't like it! We miss those size 12s thundering through the house. Looking forward to his visit. It'll be our third time seeing him since enlistment.

Paces- 34 is great, congrats. I married my X boyfriend's best friend. Met when I was 15! I look back & can understand why my parents were freaking out. Was just a baby, though thought I was "a bag of chips & more"!

"Gary Cooper" or "Secret Squirrel" aka my son, hasn't given up many details. We do know he'll be in the States on the left coast in a big kennel. He's looking for more leadership responsibilities. He only had three choices & this was the only one Stateside. Looks like he may make this his career. Not heard from him but rumor has it he re-upped. We were hoping Oceana would have had an opening since their kennel has just been improved. VA would have been lovely & close. But, alas, no joy. Hope we get more info when he gets home.., whenever that is.....

Chriswick when does he leave the sand? Soon? My guy leaves sometime after 2014. Perhaps no leave for him before that. Is GF going where he goes? Happy Anniversary! Impressive number! In Ca. Folks seem to only stay married for a decade! Really!

Chriscwick...Congratulations. That is fantastic. We will soon celebrate our 29th. We long distance dated for 5 years so we have been together 34. I married my brother's best friend.

We have another year. Our son is counting the days already. Hoping he will get home for a visit later in the summer or early fall.

Let us know where his next assignment is. Have enjoyed this adventure with you. It has truly made it easier.

There are folks that visit. There isn't a ton to do. And it is very expensive. You could meet him elsewhere for a family Holiday. Germany- Dubai.... ? My Sailor is very young and the Baby of a large family- those Bahrain Sailors made him feel like one of them. He has never missed us once out of Boot Camp. 2 visits here- he really enjoyed home but was ready to return to work.
