OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches,museums,malls on and off base,the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs,laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music,movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base.This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain,middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.

Here is some advice he gave:

When she gets here, she will go through a whole housing brief and they will explain how things work. My son used a realtor but he is not sure if they do that any more. He thinks he almost was the last group to do so. There is a housing office right on base that can answer any of her questions. They will give her up to 45 days in a hotel to find an apartment. Hope that helps!

Do anyone know of any resources or contacts for looking apartments.This is all new to me I thought bootcamp and A school scary. Any advise or comment would greatly appreciated. daqueen

That is the hard part no knowing how he is doing. Laurie, thanks for your comment about visiting. It is nice to know they can have food delivered.

Comment by Laurie on January 20, 2015 at 3:32pm: I haven't been on the site for a while but wanted give a view of Bahrain. My son has been stationed there since 12/2012. I traveled to Bahrain to see him last month after he broke his leg during some recreation on base. The CO was very nice and gave me a tour of the base and discussed the typical work day/week. The base area has lots of recreation opportunities and on base shopping. They do not have a hospital so any serious care is done at a local hospital. They work 14-15 hour shifts, including the command staff. My son is an E4 so lives off base. His apartment is 2 bdrm's and large. His housing allowance covers the expense. I was somewhat disappointed to learn that they did not offer much support with meals/transportation for sailors in my son's situation (which is basically on housebound for 1 month). Luckily for him they have "the Hunger line" where you can call for fast food (McDonalds, Burger King, etc.) to be delivered to your door!

Comment by cocoruff on January 19, 2015 at 10:58pm: Hi moms. My son was previously stationed in Sasebo Japan. His ship was decommissioned at Pearl Harbor Hawaii in September. I have been able to spend some time with him the past month, but tomorrow he leaves for Bahrain. I don't know how to feel. I've done some research and it seems like a nice place. I'm going to miss him so. I'm glad I found this group to know other moms feel like myself.

Comment by Lovemyseabee on January 13, 2015 at 11:41pm: KC's Mom...I haven't been on here for awhile. I am so sorry to hear that your son had his wife to leave him when he is doing his job. I feel his pain but on the other side of it. My husband was stationed in Bahrain for a year. He came back to the states a couple of months ago. We were headed to CA to his new duty station when half way across the US he tells me he doesn't want to be married anymore. I was so excited for him to come home and go on with our lives and out of the blue...it's over just like that. He got into the partying stage over there, drinking and girls. Hanging out with single (probably lower rank then him) and so, here we are. My prayers go out to all of you. It can be hard on both sides for a military marriage I guess...either service member finds someone while gone or spouse gets tired of being left alone. Either way...it sucks and it hurts. I hope your son has managed to keep focused.

My son has been on the GDub in Yoko, Japan for 3 years and he is ready to reinlist....he was thinking of Hawaii or San Diego....however Bahrain came up on the choices and everybody is telling him to go there.....He is seriously considering this and I am not thrilled with this idea....Everybody is telling him that he will make a lot of money, no taxes, nice housing, beautiful trips, etc....If your son or daughter is in Bahrain recently can you tell me their experience.....Thank you!

He has lived his whole life in California, born and raised and even stationed in Lemoore Ca. As a mom I am sad but so excited at the same time. I look forward to reading all your comments.
