Hi All!

To begin, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to read this and helping to ease some of my concerns. My fiancé left for boot camp December 7th and is going in the 6 year nuke program. I thought I was clear on how we would handle our situation by getting married after he finishes school, but before he leaves for active duty. But now the more I read the more confused I get. Here are my questions.

1. He entered boot camp as an E3, what are the time constraints, restrictions or procedures for marriage once he finishes boot camp? If I could, I’d like to marry him on his graduation day, but I don’t think that’s an option LOL

2. I live in California, and am not planning on moving to his base during A school immediately, but I’d like to know what our options would be, should I choose to. Anyone recently go through the moving onto base situation? The only reason I ask “recently” is I’ve been hearing conflicting stories about either the Navy only assisting with moving costs if you were married prior to boot camp or they won’t assist at all because of the economy and want to find out the most up to date info.

3. If I was able to move to base housing during his A school would he be able to share the same house with me?

4. When he is eventually shipped overseas, how difficult is it for me to go with him and live on base?

5. Can you have pets while living on base?

Okay, that’s all for now. Let me know if you have any answers/suggestions/advise for me.

Hey :) My husband is in the Nuke program also. We got married October 9, 2010. He graduated bootcamp July 23. I'll try to answer your questions as best I can!

1. From what I've heard, it isn't against the rules to get married graduation weekend. From everything I've read it's "frowned upon" which I'm not really sure what that means. My husband waited until he got to Charleston and talked to his commanding officer about it, and he gave him the ok. There weren't any time constraints or restrictions. We weren't required to go through marriage counseling.

2. We moved into a house on base about 2 weeks after we got married. After we moved, we did get about $500 as compensation for the move. But a friend of mine that moved here in February said that her and her husband got money up front for the move as well as money afterwards. If you did decide to move there, I would tell him to definitely go to the housing office and talk to someone about what the options are. My husband also had the option to come home for a week and help me with the move, but we didn't want him to have to move back a class so we decided against it.

3. Once you're married he would be able to live with you. They're only required to live on base during A-School, but if you get married then he would be allowed to move before the end of A-School.

4. If he gets stationed overseas you'll be able to move with him. The Navy would pay for that and you could have them pack up everything for you and move it if you wanted.

5. You're allowed to have 2 pets on base. Unless it's like fish or something then I'm sure it doesn't matter haha.

I hope this helped! :) Let me know if you have any more questions!

Thank you so much! It's nice to get some clear answers. The is so much back and forth info on the internet I started getting confused. What's it like living on base? What do you do all day? Is the money he makes enough for you to live on? Sorry for all the questions, but I have a pretty good job at home and haven't ever been dependent on anyone for anything, so for me to pack up and move the a Naval base is a hard decision to make. :)
I know how you feel! I know how confused and overwhelmed I felt while my husband was in bootcamp and I was trying to figure everything out on my own. This site has been a lifesaver!! I really like living on base, I know several people who live off base because you can get more money back from your BAH. But I feel safer living on base because the neighborhood right outside base isn't so great. When we first moved here I spent most of my day unpacking boxes and setting up the house, which really made the days go by fast. Now that everything is pretty much unpacked, I clean a lot haha. I've made friends since I moved here and that gives me something to do during the day too. My husband does make enough for us to live on, but I want to get a job to occupy my time and so we can save up a lot of money. I just started applying for jobs a few days ago. Up until I got married and moved here, I lived with my parents still so it was kind of an adjustment moving 4 hours away and doing everything on my own all of a sudden. But I'm really happy here and don't regret deciding to move up here!
Wow this site is def. proving to be a life saver!! Lol.. Every question I've gone to ask some else already has and has gotten a thorough response. I know this isnt the Boot Camp site but I had a question that maybe you can help. I've been trying to find out if he will get weekend liberty after he graduates? There seem to be a lot of conflicting info (is it one of those things that varies for everyone?) Lol I'm trying to decide how long to stay in Chicago after he graduates (he's leaving at the end of the month :/). Any info would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks ladies!
It varies, but do you know where he's going for A-School? If he's staying in Great Lakes then he'll have the whole weekend of liberty. My husband flew to Charleston on Saturday after graduation. And it sucks because you won't find out if he's grad and go or not until maybe a few weeks before PIR. I would try to find airline tickets that may be changeable. Or just wait until you find out to buy the tickets. If he is grad and go, I think it's safe to say you'll have at least Friday with him. And then Saturday you could go to the airport and meet him there. My husband's flight was supposed to leave at like 1 but there was bad weather so it ended up getting delayed until 5. But other guys had flights leaving like in the morning. So it just depends :(
not sure if you've heard lately but they quit giving weekend (overnight) liberty to all sailors graduating boot camp. :( my husband graduated 2 weeks after they stopped! but since we're married and i have a military id i was able to stay on base at the gateway inn and suites which was the building next to the building he moved to for a school, so we got to spend alot of time together!
Maybe somebody can help me? Fiancé is in boot camp and his PIR is April 15th, (he's a grad-and-go so he'll head straight for pensicola without a liberty week.) Here's the kicker -- I'm still in school and have NO clue where I'll be going next semester or where I'll be living -- did anybody else have this issue? Also, where does the wedding come in and how do you plan when you don't exactly know when he'll be home? I know it will be roughly end of may, beginning of June, but I can't be totally sure until he actually graduates A school. And it is my understanding that there is only a two-week window between a school graduation and when he gets stationed. ALSO, when will i find out where he will be stationed so i can begin looking for a new job and a new school. And our spouses' tuitions paid for? Because i'm leaving a full-ride academic scholarship. Lol. Pleaseeeeee help :)

I'm not sure on the leave part of that! but for the schooling there is a program called Mycaa i think that has grants for spouses tuition. when i move i'll be looking into that!

we ended up getting married "on paper" before our wedding day just to make things easier!

Hey Jess

im going through the same thing. My Fiancee is also a Nuke. I have talked to a bunch of other Nuke wives and most of them have told me that if i want to have a "real" wedding (not at JOP or a court house) to do it in between nuke school and prototype school. They usually get a break in between the 2 so that is when we will be getting married. We were originally going to wait until he was finished with all of the schools but if we do that then i wont be on his paperwork for when he is stationed somewhere. While he does his last school i will stay in cali (where i live) to do schooling.  So there for our choice made most scene for us! Hope i answered this in time to help! And if you need anything message me. Like i said my guy is a Nuke too so we can help each other out!

Cait

So what if his A school is in pensacola . How long after he gets there will he be able to get off base for us to get married ??
