Hello, I'm sure this information is out there and I'm probably not looking in the right locations, but does anyone know when we will find out how much leave a SR will have after PIR or when they will leave for A-School? My son will be a sub machinist mate (unless something changes special forces or something). We are trying to book our flights for graduation, but don't know if he will have leave or be able to come home or leave immediately.

I've been told there is no leave between PIR and A-School. My son went in as a Nuke.
Ha left a week ago. :(

Check out more of this website ie New Moms and the Boot Camp group I seen you've looked at.
There is a home page with lots of these details.

Also, check multiple airports for flights. I can get to Milwaukee cheaper from Greensboro than o'Hare but I don't know his PIR date yet so until then i'm wait and see... Wait and see...

If they are Nuke, they leave for Charleston immediately, the day after PIR usually, but some may leave on Sunday or Monday.  My son PIR'd Nov. of 2010 and he didn't leave for Charleston until the following Wed., but I hear that now they usually have them leave on Saturday or Sunday.  That being said, when they get to Charleston, or Goose Creek, they usually will have the rest of the weekend off to get in their room and  depending on how quickly they start their indoc briefings, they should have a weekend or two off as well.  The first leave will most likely come AFTER they finish A school, when they usually get 10 days, but that can vary.

You need to just plan on him leaving Saturday if he is going somewhere other than Great Lakes for A-School.  If he is staying at Great Lakes he'll have to move into his A school on Friday and then have some liberty the rest of the weekend.  You won't know more specifics until he knows them and that won't be until right before PIR.

When we made our plans, we planned to leave as late in the weekend as we could so that we would be able to spend whatever time was available with our SR.  As it turned out, we had Friday after PIR and then much of Saturday at the airport.

Definitely check out the RTC website for official information:  http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/index.asp  Under the Families tab, be sure to download, PRINT, and read thoroughly the Family Guide.  It will have good information to know and keep with you.

Thank you all for your replies! Don't know what I would do without this site!

My son's PIR is April 13 and he's also going to Charleston for Nuke school.  We received a letter from him on Saturday that said the Nukes had to be at the Airport by 2:00am Saturday morning but that we could spend time with him at the USO there.  From what I've heard that's pretty much typical but he also said that they will get final word a couple of days before PIR.  I'm going to change my flight from Sunday to Saturday - late afternoon or evening so we can spend the day in the airport with him if he's there for the day.

Hope this helps : )

Hi, my son is signed up as a sub machinist mate too! He leaves for bootcamp on 3/29 so our kids are probably not going to be together though. Best wishes!
