Hey everyone. Just a quick question about A Scool stuff. With all the bills being paid and paying for the trip there won’t be much left in the account so I want to make sure there’s at least enough in there for him to get what he needs there.

So what do they typically buy when they arrive at A school? Are they provided sheets and toiletries like shampoo and soap?

Hi there. When my son got down there he told me he had to buy everything he needed. Cleaning supplies and he asked for lots of snacks. I guess they can eat at the galley for free but they basically pay for anything they want/need. He sd its like a dorm. I'm not sure if other parents heard the same from their kids. This is all i know . He sd it gets chilly at night so i  sent  him his blanket. He pays for his own wifi which he sd is slow. Wondering if there is anyway to get around that? But he has his games and tv as well.

My son said all he needed to buy was a notebook for class. He has become quite frugal now that he is living 100% of his own income.

  • PProudMom314  Frugal is right! I believe that is why my son had requests. So he can save his money.  Funny how that works when they have to pay their own way.  Once i found out how much stuff was on base i told him packages will now be fee and far between . Lol

My son was given bed linens, but other than that he has to buy toiletries, etc.

They have bed linens, and may or may not be allowed personal bedding.  A second blanket or quilt is nice, but they cannot leave it out.  Toiletries are all their own responsibility.  Wifi is usually shared with roommates, but they will almost assuredly need to pay for that, and it will suck.  They have to buy their own cleaning supplies, although there might be mops and brooms.  Laundry pods and dryer sheets are great, unscented is best.  Plug in air fresheners are usually not allowed (they're bad for you anyway).  Febreeze spray is an option.

No fun stuff like for college dorms, i.e. cute rugs and posters and lamps and trashcans.  Nope nope nope.  They can have TVs and game systems with permission.  Sometimes they can have something like a coffee maker. The rules vary on that, and they won't want to carry it when they leave.

Anti M is there anything different they can do for wifi? My son complains about how bad it is:(

Each base/area is different, so I do not have an answer.  Honestly, they are stuck with what is allowed on base, there is usually only one cable option.  A hot spot will not be great either, and can get expensive.  He needs to find the geekiest gamer in the barracks and find out what they do.  The answer might be "suck it up, buttercup".

Hello good morning! At A school do the recruit pay for their food? In GL Thank you

Ruby. They are given meal allowance in their check and then it is deducted right make out. This gets them their meals in the galley. I am only familiar with Great Lakes as that is where my son is in school.  There are fast food and other restaurants on base. If they choose to eat there, they pay cash.

Do they need their laptops?

I purchased a tablet for my son. He says he uses it all the time. There are computers they can use at Great Lakes ( only A school) I am familiar with. However, they are all far from his ship and never seem to work well.

Also, I took suggestion from other moms and purchased a black watch. I think it was a shockwave. He uses that everyday.

My son just arrived at A school. $10/mo for WiFi, $50/mo for “good” WiFi.
