Hi all,

My recruit arrived at RTC on 4/26 and his PIR is scheduled for 6/22. While I have not received the Form letter yet I have spoken to his recruiter.

I'm anxious to get flight arrangements booked because the cost will go up by the day. Did any of you book your flights before receiving the form letter?  I'm not as concerned about the hotel as there are many options but this flight is on the expensive side so wanted to book asap.

Thanks for your advice!

I would wait on the letter. So much can happen before the letter is sent. It takes a while (seems forever) but it is the best information. Recruiters have what it is now but it changes based on "the needs of the navy".  I booked mine with Sandboxx. They have insurance you can purchase so if your SR dates changes you don't have to pay the outrageous change fee. If your SR doesn't graduate (god forbid) you get your money back. I will be traveling on Memorial Day Weekend and my tickets were a good price, much cheaper than if I went refundable and changeable. They do cars too.

Thanks very much for your advice! I was wondering if I should use Sandboxx as I never heard of it until seeing it on this site, and it does have some flexibility.

Thanks again!!

Oh, and make sure your hotel has a good cancellation policy. It could be last minute change if there is a problem with BST

Definitely wait for the letter to arrive, as my Sailor was told his PIR would be one date, but when he arrived at RTC he was put into a Push division and ended up graduating a week earlier than we had expected. Also, depending on where you are flying from I suggest booking on Southwest as they do not have a change fee in the event something happens and you need to revise your flights, plus bags fly free!

SailAway I have heard some families used the sandboxx for travel and they seemed to like it. I myself never used. I would go with Soutwest myself. My Son was also in a Push Division, he liked it.

Push Division: a division in which some or all of the recruits in the division have less than 9 Fridays at the RTC. Sometimes recruits who arrive at the end of one week (Wednesday and Thursday and the wee hours of Friday) are held in P-days until more recruits arrive at the beginning of the next week (Monday and Tuesday and the wee hours of Wednesday) to fill the division and they have PIR with the TG that began filling in the previous week. The recruits arriving the second week are pushed forward a week and are at the RTC 7 1/2 weeks rather than the typical 8 1/2 weeks that others in the division are or that others who arrived on the same day will be. The Push Divisions are typically just the last two divisions in the TG and will be among the last to go through BST, so they will make the “I’m a Sailor!” call only a day or two before PIR, which means there is less opportunity to redo something (like a failed run, which can only be run every other day), so the RDCs also push this group to be ready to be US Navy Sailors on time and the first time. The actual training time for all divisions in 6 weeks so they have plenty of time to learn everything they need to learn to have PIR on time. It is common for those in an 800 division to be in a Push Division (see 800 and 900 Divisions) and the last two to four regular divisions in many TG's are Push Divisions. 900 divisions are rarely Push Divisions, but it does happen at times, more often for a Triple Threat Division if they had difficulty finding musicians among the recruits.

Thank you Phoenix mom I didn't think about the Push Division part and my son arrived late on a Thursday night so that is a possibility from what you describe.  Also a lot of votes for Southwest so will keep that in mind as well while I wait for the Form Letter.  You're a wealth of information I truly appreciate it.

Push divisions are the last divisions in the TG. It is more common for those who arrive on Monday and Tuesday to be in a Push Division and have 8 Fridays than it is for one who ships on Wednesday or Thursday to have less than 9 Fridays (even if they do end up in a Push Division due to the late arrivals). In the summer and around Thanksgiving, sometimes those who ship at the end of the week actually end up with 10 Fridays due to the large number of recruits shipping, but it is rare this time of year unless the recruit fails the initial PFA and passes on the second try.

Thanks SailAway!
