Can someone help with airline tickets? It looks like O'Hare is the closest airport. Everything i've read says to buy refundable tickets. Are there any tricks to this for the best price? We have 3 people and it will be middle of hurricane season. I'd rather not drive 15 hrs. Help! Thanks! Also, if staying at Navy Lodge, do you need a rental car? I heard they have an airport shuttle.

Navy lodge does not have shuttle to and from airport, but there is a taxi, or someone I know suggested uber. Lodge does have shuttle to ceremony. Just booked my room there yesterday.

Midway is about the same distance and Southwest (which will let you make changes with no fee) flies into there. It was also a REALLY good fare, was the lowest I'd found out of Norfolk.  I'd also get a rental car, you can shuttle all over i suppose, but you're stuck at the lodge during down time with no way to get around... plus if you want to take your sailor out to eat, you'll need a way to get there. Hope that helps.

We just booked our flights from miami to chicago o hare and family of 7 going to graduation and will be renting a car.
Staying at the sleep inn they have a rate for navy graduation and also a shuttle
If you can, fly Southwest. They let you change your flights. They only fly into Midway. We rented a car but we stayed at the Springhill Suits and not the Navy Lodge. If you need an airport shuttle call Sarge. I highly recommend his services.
Thanks ya'll. I called navy lodge and the very nice person said no airport shuttles and also highly recommended a car rental. I thought Midway was a much further drive? Thanks for info!
If you fly southwest, also check fares to Milwaukee. A few more miles, but less traffic .Southwest often has really good flight/ car packages .

I suggest that you use Sarges Taxi Service.  www.mynavytaxi.com

if you book a round trip with him  (airport to hotel and back) he gives you a complementary ride to the graduation.

Try not to book until you get the letter that way you know for sure what date.  I planned for 9 weeks when my SR left and I was wrong.  He was put in a division that would graduate in 8 weeks.  That Gosh I paid the extra for the ability to change my flight without a huge fee.  I did have to pay extra for the plane ticket as it is Labor Day weekend.  I booked through Travelosity.

How do you book the Navy Lodge?
I called them directly, 847-689-1485. They also have a website. You book under your SR's name. I got a room for $66 per night. I like the fact that they have a shuttle to PIR.

By all means have a car.  If you don't have one, you're pretty much stuck with NOTHING around.  Some folks took the train into Chicago because the station is near the PIR building.  I think it was $10/head.  Plus side: no parking fee; negative side: you work on the train's schedule.

A 15 hour drive is long but with a couple of drivers it can be a good adventure.  We drove from New Mexico and saw the Rt. 66 sights along the way.

For my son's PIR in July 2012, we flew Southwest into Midway, as they are the only airlines I that I am aware of that have refundable tickets, or tickets you can use later. We rented a car with the ability of going through tolls.
