My son is going to Groton, Conn. for submarine training after boot camp.  I was wondering if there was anyone else out there that had someone going to sub school.

Congrats!!! My son's PIR is in 3 weeks, I can't wait for the "I'm a Sailor!" call.

The sub base sits on the Thames River (Pronounced like it looks, not "Tems" like in London). Just down the road is Electric Boat, where they build submarines. Groton is known as the Submarine Capitol of the World. And that was a jeopardy clue the other night, BTW! It is small town. There is a roller skating rink not far from the base, I met my hubby there in fact! It is called Galaxy now, way back when it was Roll on America and was owned by a Navy guy! Nearby is Mystic, actually where I grew up after a few years in Newport, RI. Mystic is a lovely small town, was a whaling town back in the day. There is a nice downtown area, streets line with beautiful old homes that once belonged to whaling captains and the like. Also in Mystic is The Mystic Seaport. This is a historic museum, set up like a whaling village with old buildings that were moved there from actual whaling villages, plus the oldest wooden whaling ship still in existence, the Charles W. Morgan, which recently had some work done on it and was relaunched last week. This is a fun place to visit, and I spent a lot of my youth there. There are old homes, and sometimes they are cooking in the kitchen, blacksmith, apothecary, coopersmith, etc. Down the road is Olde Mystic Village, a cute little shopping center set up like an old village (I remember when this was built!). Next door to that is the Mystic Aquarium, if you like sea life! Some other nice nearby  towns to explore are Noank, and Stonington. Beaches are good. Groton has Eastern Point Beach which is good, Esker Pt which is ok, and Groton Long Pt, but you need a permit for parking there. New London across the river has Ocean Beach which is nice, Lyme, East Lyme, Old Saybrook and Niantic are also across the river, and have some nice shoreline. My friends and I usually went to Misquamicut, RI for the beaches there, maybe 30 minutes from Groton. In Waterford, CT is Harkness St Park with an old mansion and beautiful grounds for walking and picnicking. Directly across the river from the sub base is the Coast Guard Academy, and across the street from that is the beautiful campus of Connecticut College. In Groton Haley Farm State Park and Bluff Point State Park, great places for hiking and enjoying nature, and picnicking and swimming (Bluff Pt) maybe some x-country skiing at Haley Farm in winter,I'm not sure. Also in Groton is Ft Griswold, a revolutionary war fort with an obelisk monument you can climb. The fort is fun to explore, with tunnels and such. A battle  ensued here when the British invaded, led by the traitor Benedict Arnold.

I think I covered almost everything that might be of interest!

Peace,

Annette

Thank you! I'm going to print that off and show my husband!!  Thanks for sharing all the information especially since we all have someone that is or will be going to Groton.

Hi there:

My son just left for basic at Great Lakes also-July 24th, 2013.  He will be going to

Groton for sub school after.  It is nice to read these posts.   I get alot of information

and comfort from reading them.  Thanks alot!

What will your son be doing?

As I have said, I am from Groton myself, born on the sub base and raised in Mystic. My brother works in heating and a/c and his company contracts to the base, and that is where he works. The other day he sent me a photo of his company's new office there, one of those prefab construction buildings. But what he pointed out was that I would probably not recognize the site, and the building that used to be there was long gone, but he said, "that was where you danced with your husband while you were wearing your wedding dress all those years ago. Do you remember that day?" Yes, I do, it was 30 years in May, and our wedding reception was at the CPO club there on base. A little piece of history our SR will not see! <3

I finally got my letter.  My son's PIR is 09/13 and he is in SHIP 12 DIV 350.  Anyone else out there going to Groton from this division??
