OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Contact lenses in boot camp?
My son wears contact lenses - I know that in boot camp they give them the lovely glasses (BCG's) to wear, but my question is: how long does it take for them to get their glasses made for them? Can my son wear his contacts in the beginning or should he take his old pair of glasses? I don't want him to be stuck with the same lenses for a few days with nothing to store them in.... And at what point near the end of boot camp do I send him his contact lenses/solution? He leaves on 10/23 so just trying to get things in order before he ships!

He is allowed to take glasses and contacts with him. Here is the list of what is okay to bring from the bootcamp website:

And now they actually get issued better looking glasses than before. They are more modern in style.

My son graduated BC 9/28/12 and this was our experience with contacts/glasses. He does not own a pair of glasses so he took a small bottle of solution and his case with him to boot camp and he was wearing his contacts when he arrived in GL. They made him throw away his contacts first night and the very next day he was issued his BC glasses. His solution and case came back with his clothes in the "Kid in a Box". I sent him his contacts, case and small bottle of solution 1 week before PIR and he was able to wear them for the graduation. Hope this helps! Good luck to you and your SR. Kazzam

good info kazzam my son took a small bottle of solution and a case with him too but they were in the box. I wish he had been able to take them out and put them in the case instead of discarding them. He put in a brand new pair just before he left :/
He did not have glasses to take with him because he dove in the lake with them on. We rented a boat for a day on the lake for his birthday. After he dove in, swam to shore, walked around for a few minutes, then came back to the boat he climbs back on and says "did I have my glasses on when I dove in?"
I also wonder if he had to do an eye exam because his perscription from the eye dr came back in the box too.

Yes, I am pretty sure they do an eye exam to make sure they have the right strength/prescription. I was amazed at how fast he got them. When I received his stuff in the "Box", I was so worried he was going to have walk around with "nothing" till they made his glasses. But it worked out very well with getting them the next day. Funny story about your son and the lake, this same thing happen to my son right before BC. He was on a jet ski though and his brand new sun glasses went down to the bottom of the lake. :(

Thank you salpetty and kazzam....that's great that they can get them glasses made that quickly. He will be happy that he can at least wear his contacts to BC. When they take their pictures he will probably take off the glasses because knowing him he won't want his picture with glasses on! I hope this is ok...
I will make a note to send them back to him before graduation. Thanks again!

You are welcome B'snukemom and yes he can take off the glasses for the pics. My son did. My son had never worn a pair of glasses ever so I was worried about him adjusting to the look and the feel, but he said they weren't bad looking and they weren't that bad to get used to either.

Yep, have him put in an OLD pair of contacts if he has them hanging around cause he will just have to toss them and his case and solution will come back in the box. When he got to A school I mailed them his contacts and solution after that, but he does wear his glasses a lot, he doesn't mind them and he got the "new" style that are much better!!!

My son wore his contacts and took his glasses. The contacts he wore he threw away when he got there. His case was sent back in "kid in a box" he said he got his BCGs the next week. He graduates next week and last week we mailed his contacts only for PIR... No solution or case.

my sailor graduated 08/10/12. His contacts,solution and everything came home in the box. he was in his BC's the next day. When we saw him at gradution (after PIR), he changed into his contacts and has been in them ever since. he took them off for his formal pix.
