Hello Fellow Moms! this is my first post, so please excuse me if I make an error.  I know the Navy will inevitably "push" my son to sigh up for more than the standard 4 years.  I am curious as to how many of your kids ended up extending?  If they didnt, were they hassled? is there a magic term to use to get the navy to stop pressuring? we want our son to wait and decide to continue or not - and will support either decision - but would like the decision to be based on experience/wisdom, and not pressure. Thoughts?

My bf wasn't pressured to sign up for more than the min. when he signed up. I don't think they pressure him so much its just hard to turn down some of the stuff they give you (enlistment bonuses) But from everyone I've talked to everyone signs up for the min. and then few years in or w.e signs up for more years or leaves.
big bonuses at that.. sometimes they are hard to say no to. lol
They will always ask for you to sign up for more years.  It's just how they work.  My son will wait and see how things go.  Don't think this is the one and only chance he will get to sign up for more than four years.  Be patient.  More opportunities will come along.
Thank you all! Bonnie I will try to figure out posting to the main group - good idea. as for the pressure - I guess i have just seen too many movies.  from your 3 comments i can see my son will ba able to wait & decide, which is the best.  thanks again moms!
We were told that NO enlistment bonuses were being prominsed right now. Government cut it on their last round. Our son-in-law (Army) told us the same thing...he was promised a bonus and then told that he wouldn't be getting it, having problems even getting a check at times.
Hopefully that is for the new comers and the new relistedments. I don't think they can break the contract the the recruits signed... We'll I hope not at least.
What I have seen from one in the Air Force and one in the Navy and know a few in the other branches, it depends on several factors.  my AF son was given the option of retraining to a new area or leaving the service.  I have heard from others that they do not have to let you reenlist and some they encourage to leave after their time is up.  With budget cuts you may see some that are told to change jobs or leave depending on what that particular needs at that time, they may have too many in one area and need more in another and if you are not willing to change then you are gone.  If he has just signed up you have time to worry about this later, do not borrow worries that may or may not happen.

My son signed for 4 and 4 , 4 active and 4 reserved inactive. Things were discussed before he signed the contract. My son was never pressured.
