Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Just joined this group. Any mom that has sailor leaving 12/5/11?
Our sailor leaving for boot 12/5. Exactly what should he take with him other than clothes on his back - any toiletries at all? He leaves from Jacksonville, FL. Anyone been to Jax for swearing in?

My daughter left for BC Nov. 22nd...she took toiletries but when I rec'd the box Weds. (30th) everything she took was in the box. I recommend not sending anything but his clothes. Mine took her cell phone as well just to make that first call (the I'm here I'm okay call). I would assume its no different for the male SRs. Oh and best to wear clothes/shoes he wouldn't mind donating so that he can save money & not have to ship anything home unless he takes cell phone & wants to send that back. The $ to ship box is deducted from their check if I'm not mistaken. I'm in AZ but her swearing in was an emotional moment as well but it really does make you feel so very Proud. My daughter was picked up @ 5am on the 22nd by her recruiter and taken to MEPS in Phoenix. Those who live outside the area have to be picked up the night before & stay in hotel. We waited for about 3-4 hours at the MEPS before she left for the airport, which we were there as well when she arrived. Most airlines (hers was Southwest) will let parents/siblings (those over 18 must have ID although they limit # of passes they give out) have an escort pass so you can stay with him & watch him board the plane. I know this because my Hubby works for TSA & her sister & I got a escort pass . I'm assuming its the same (or with little differences) @ every airport. 1 thing: your SR has to be with you to get escort pass, or at least she had to be with us to get ours @ Sky Harbor, and you'll have to go through security like everyone else. I don't know if Jacksonville has a local MEPS or if its near or not. I was shocked to see many of the soon to be Military people that didn't have family there to watch them swear in, I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Your SR will most likely swear in with other branches of the Military. Ashley (my SR) swore in with just 1 other person (Army). She has been in BC for almost 2 weeks now. Feel free to ask questions & I will try to answer or find an answer for you. You will find this whole site very beneficial because I know I sure have. You can add me as a friend as well if you would like. I'm not sure what the cut off date of SRs shipping is for PIR but when you find out his division (for sure when get Form Letter) you will find out his PIR. Ashley's is Jan. 27th. Our son leaves 12/06/2011. His recruitor told us a book bag with one set of change of clothes, a calling card and at least twenty dollars. He told us that its not worth packing anything cause as soon as they get there it all gets send back to us. We also watched the video on the NAVY website utube ,which showed exactly what they go through when they get there. This gives you a better idea on what happens when he arrives.

Oh yeah forgot about the calling card thanks MMT that is def. something for him to have. We gave our daughter $20 as well but they were able to eat Lunch at MEPS and gave each one in group a $25 or $30 meal ticket for dinner @ airport. She also said they went out to eat as soon as they arrived @ O'hare. Not sure why you're recruiter said a change of clothes unless he is to stay the night (the night b4 he ships out for BC) @ a hotel? I know they are given the "Smurf" jumpsuit looking outfit as soon as arrive at RTC. They are then asked to put everything else in box or donate.

The change of clothes is for the hotel stay the night prior to leaving. I'll have to let our son know about the Smurf jumpsuit looking outfits. LOL I keep looking at him not wanting Monday to come. We are very proud of him but it will be hard letting him go. He is our last one leaving home and I know its going to hit me hard, I feel it already. It must of been hard seeing your daughter leave.

Yeah I kind of figured that's what the extra clothes are for. My daughter didn't need them since the MEPS is in Phoenix,AZ & we live about 30min West. Believe me I didn't want the 22nd to come either. The 21st I was up all night & some the previous night as well just crying my eyes out. She is our first to leave home. Also didn't sleep the night she left, & kept picking up & looking @ phone waiting for the I'm ok, I'm here call (which started the tear factory again). My middle child (daughter as well) is also joining the Military in 2013 just not sure what branch yet, but Navy @ top. My youngest (son) is interested in the Marines but still has a while since he just turned 13 yesterday. So I will go through this 2 more times. Although I have to say I hope it gets easier, & me & my oldest (one in BC now) had/has the tightest bond & were like best friends not just mother/daughter. So, yes it will be really tough & very emotional but know that I as well as others have gone through the same thing & know how you are feeling. And don't hesitate to come here and vent, cry, sceam or whatever it is you have to do. You can add me as a friend if you would like & I would be glad to lend a helping hand/ear whenever you need it...MMT & Akeylimepie as well. Together we all will get through this difficult time in our lives. We are Proud Moms but we are Moms so its very emotional for us all.

Hi,
My son is leaving on Friday the 9th from Phoenix. What time can we go down to MEPS to see him swear in? He will be getting picked up at 5am. And he just got a new recruiter.

My daughter was picked up @ 5am as well. We were @ MEPS b4 9am, Her swearing in was @ 10am. We sat @ MEPS for 3-4 hours after swearing in because her flight wasn't until 4pm. Left for airport around 1ish. Wish you & your SR the best.

Hi to all of you and congratulations on having such wonderful children who want to serve this country!! It's a tough job for them but it's just as tough for the families. My son left for boot camp on September 28th and just graduated on November 23rd. It was honestly the best day ever to be there and see him and his division - they are so grown up - still the kids you sent away, but yet so much more. If you are able to be there I highly recommend it!
For those of you who haven't joined it yet there is a group for everyone who has kids leaving for bootcamp in December. I believe if you search "leaving for boot camp in December" you will find it. It's a great group and you meet a lot of moms, many who will be part of your PIR group once that date is set. It's nice because everyone is going through the same thing at the same time so if you have a question chances are someone else has the same one and you are all in the same place to have it answered. I made a bunch of new friends through that group that went on to my PIR group and are now part of the group that I belong to for my son's A school.
There are many vet moms here that can help you out. This site was truly a Godsend when my son left. It helped me through just knowing what was going on and being a step ahead of things. If you are Facebook members there is also a RTC facebook page that is awesome.

MY son leaves to day from Miami. I went yesterday to the hotel. We live in West Palm Beach, and I had to have him at the Navy office at ten and they left for Miami. I went down to Miami and he could not check in until 3:30 when they get the fax from Meps. He did not check in until 3:45 and the free meal ticket for the motel was not good until 5:00. But we talked to the manger and we got the eat early. He was scared and tired and running of empty. But once he got his foot is started to perk up. But all he wanted to do was just sleep. So I just said my good by at the hotel and let him go back to his room to sleep because five comes early. And I know that today will be a long day for him anyway. I did not know you could go to meps to see them and go to the airport. Our Navy officer said officially we were not allowed to go to the hotel. But I look at it as I my I was in the area. The hotel is a public building. Besides he was just setting in the lobby, playing on the computer. I will be hearing from a lot of you. We can all help each other out through the 8 wks of boot camp.
