Events

**UPDATE - 2020**

Due to COVID there is no public PIR. The graduations are on Thursday, and the video of the graduation is posted on RTC's FaceBook on Friday at approx 3pm. Please keep in mind that a division may need to complete additional quarantine during training which will delay their graduation.

Please note! Changes to this guide happened in October 2017. Tickets are now issued for all guests, and all guests must have a ticket to enter base. A separate parking pass is no longer needed to drive on to base for parking.

Please see changes to attending PIR in the PAGES column. The PAGES are located under the member icons on the right side.

Hello. I'm new to the group and hope I'm not repeating a question already asked and answered. My son is in bootcamp with his PIR scheduled for 9/17. We believe we missed a call from him on Sunday with the 847 area code. He also made an attempt to call his brother who missed that call too. Does anyone know if he will have another opportunity to call us? We were heartbroken and hope we will get another call.

Happy to be part of this great group!

You can always hope!  I hate to say it but it is likely not, other than the “I’m a sailor” call the week of PIR! My son PIR 9/18 and we only got one phone call last week and that was it.  They seem to be making fewer phone calls now with social distancing (my older son who PIR last year got multiple calls).

However, he is almost done now, it’s not long and he will have his cell phone back!!!!!

Thanks for the quick reply. I will keep my fingers crossed but assumed not :(

I have another question. His initial paperwork we received many weeks back had a PIR of 9/18, however the website looks like it was changed to 9/17. Can this be confirmed?

Braveheart5 - first of all Welcome to BC Mom group!!

A few weeks back they changed the PIR date to Thursdays and our understanding is so they could get the new sailors shipped to their various A schools. However, not all of them are shipping on Friday. They have been videotaping the PIR and playing those on Friday, however, if a division is held back or pulled they won't be marching and you won't see them.

It is not likely that you will get another call. Was there not a voice message left? You always want to stay hopeful that all is going well - but for me, I also have to prepare myself for the unexpected change. If all goes well with BS-21 you should receive that call and as Northwoodsmom said, keep your ringer on loud and close by.

Braveheart5 - Yes, the RTC website has the next few PIR's on Thursday's.  So you are correct that it is 9/17.  And like Northwoodsmom said - you should get the "I'm a Sailor" call next week (It's even possible you could get it this week).  Although they don't call it the "I'm a Sailor" call - us mom's do!

Hang in there!

Looking forward to the call! Thanks for the encouraging words. So proud of our kids!!!

Brave heart, he will definitely call you next week with the I'm a Sailor call. Perhaps he will get a call this weekend. Mine usually called on Saturday. Sorry you missed it, keep your phone close and on loud ringtone. God Bless you.

Thanks for making me smile! I will keep my phone close and on loud for sure! Can't wait :)

Oh, so our sons graduate on the same date.  :-)

I hope this time we get the “sailor” call earlier!  With my first son last year, he literally did not call until we were on the road driving to Chicago two days before PIR!!!!  We were sweating bullets!!!!

Of course now I guess it doesn’t really matter....

StarryNights - my son's first question when I answered was, "have you left yet?" His call was also two days prior. He so panicked me because I thought he had not passed and was asking if we had left to tell us to turn back. I had just found this site and didn't realize they don't call it the "I'm a sailor" call - I was expecting those to be the first words out of his mouth and when they weren't I was totally confused!!

LOL that’s crazy!!!   I thought the same thing about my son, he also did not say he was a sailor!  And he was rushed and just told me he didn’t have time to make the call earlier and had night watch and a few other things he had to get done.  Crazy stuff.

That's great that they are both graduating on the same date. I hope we get the call earlier too, but this year is the year of COVID. This will be a virtual graduation from everything I'm reading, correct?

Hi Braveheart5,

I left you a note on your page as well.  :)

Yes they will post the video on Friday the day they graduate. You can watch it on the RTC page on facebook or you can watch it on you tube I believe. I know another one of our moms has the links. She also volunteers her time on here. Well we all do. :)
