Looking for opinions. My son will be staying in GL for his A school. Therefore, we will have him a bit more than others will have their Sailors since he's not flying out. We'll be in GL from Thursday till Monday. We are considering going with VBRO or AirBNB for accommodations rather than a hotel. We're hoping this will help us save money by not having to eat so many meals out. Plus I want to be able to cook some home meals for my son. And I also want him to be able to have some privacy too - not having to be in one room with his parents all day for 3 days. My concern is, though, will he/we miss out on the camaraderie that would naturally occur if we stayed in a hotel where there will be other Sailors and their families? Thanks!
I recommend that you go with the VBRO or Air BNB. At my son's PIR, he was so tired that he just wanted to sleep. Most families were away from the hotel except at night. I suspect he would appreciate the privacy and chance to eat some home-cooked meals.
Thanks, harpist mom. That's what we're leaning towards doing.
We stayed in a two-bedroom suite at the Residence Inn in Waukegan for our son's PIR and it was great. They offer shuttles to and from the PIR and treat the Navy families extremely well. It also had a full kitchen, dinette set, living room, and a gas fireplace even. Each bedroom had its own bath. Like most hotels in the area, they offered a free breakfast in the morning. Might be an option to consider in addition to a VRBO/Airbnb.
Thanks, Kris. Just went to their website - no availability for a suite for the weekend we THINK PIR will be for our son.
We opted for airbnb, as we needed 3 bedrooms. It was the right call for us. My SR was grateful for the quiet. It was much cheaper than multiple hotel rooms.
Proudmom314, if you remember, would you mind sharing which airbnb you stayed at - or at least what city it was in? Thanks!
You might. We seemed not to be at our hotel much and we saw another sailor family but we didn’t engage in conversation. It may depend on where you stay, however if doing Airbnb or VBRO Iis more budget friendly, I would go that route. I stayed the same amount of days and it seemed we were quite busy. Good luck!
Navy Lodge has rooms with kitchenettes and is less expensive than typical hotels. Camaraderie and the ability to cook. Breakfast was included also. Can’t beat that!
SPBG Residence INN has nice 2 bedroom 2 bath plus living room and kitchen all utensils pans included if you cannot find what you are looking for as well. we enjoyed our stay their and there were like 6 other families as well.
And also the first thing they want to do is get on their phones, maybe take a long shower and sleep. after that EAT! we saved money by making breakfast in all his favorites. but you must try Giordanos Pizza Pie Delicious!
count 9 Fridays for a guesstimate on PIR and it could be the week before or week after depending on how the Div. got filled. if he went and had to finish filling a div. prior then week before if he had to wait to get his Div. filled then week after.
