Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Question regarding booking travel for PIR
My sisters and I have been having a discussion regarding wether it is best to book our travel plans as soon as we recieve the form letter or to wait until we recieve the "I'm a sailor" call. My concern with waiting is as I understand it we will receive the I am a sailor call anywhere from just days before PIR up to a week before and with it being at the last minute things will be booked up as well as more expensive. What has your experience been, and what are your recommendations? Thank you!

We booked our hotel as soon as we got the form letter. But now we are waiting to book the flight. When I received his first Sunday phone call he had not passed his run. He said he gets 2 more tries before they send him home. So we're waiting on that. I'm hoping for a letter from him telling me he's passed it so we can book the flight. We are using points to fly and if for whatever reason his PIR date gets changed or something of the sort we won't get a refund. I hope this helps somewhat in your decision.

Sam's mom, how far into bootcamp is your son? I'm not worried about my son passing any of the physical requirements...he is an athlete. It's the other stuff I worry about. Mostly because I don't know all that they go through or what could potentially hold him up..?

He graduates 7/7. He normally wouldn't have an issue but he was sick as many of the recruits were. He told me there was so much to memorize. He's had one test he passed and there are two more tests to go. Then right before PIR they'll have battle stations which I heard can be tough but by that time they should have no problem.

Sam's mom-- That's normal!! There is a lot to learn but most of them make it just fine. While it may not feel like it at the time the RDC's really do want the to do well and will do a lot to make that happen!

We're in California and if we want to make sarges meet and greet well likely have to fly in on Wed as most of the flights on Thurs arrive too late for us to make the dinner. I hadn't even thought about the shuttle!! I'll most likely be renting a car though because after graduation were driving to Ohio to visit family.

You may want to look into flying into MI instead of Chicago. Easier to get in and out. but check flights and costs. Renting a car gives you a ton of freedom that you won't have with relying on shuttles and taxi's. Sarge is amazing but there were still things that we did that were just easier with a car. Driving on base is not that hard!

Someone else mentioned MI to me too! It's definitely one I'm looking at. I'll have a car for sure... It's just a matter as to whether we'll drive ourselves to PIR or use the shuttle ;)

Book your flight asap!!! The cost will only go up!!! It is not at all unusual for them not to pass the first PRT or some other part of their testing. Try and find a changeable fare if you can! I love Southwest since there are no change fees and if my sailor had not passed I would only owe the difference (Or book to somewhere else!) You don't want to be trying to get everything the day before PIR!!!! :o ! That would be a nightmare!! Book your Hotel early also. There are no fees for canceling that (usually!) Waiting will cost you $$$ and anxiety and that is one thing you DO NOT need.

We are thinking of booking our hotel right away (Navy Hotel) and waiting until after the third week phone call to book the flights. SW I think allows for rescheduling of flights for a cheaper cost if we tell them its for boot camp.

Joni-- SW doesn't care about BC one way or the other. You can always change your flight you just pay the difference so if you have a Want to get away fare for $99 each way and you have to move your flight back 2 weeks and the new fare is still $99 each way then there is no fee but if you have a $99 dollar fare and have to change at the last minute and the new fare is $200 each way you would have to pay the extra $101. I'd call and confirm with them but I'm fairly sure that is correct. (at least it was 4 years ago when our son shipped.) Also make sure you check out Milwaukee, WI as a Flight destination. I just did a fare comparison for the last week of July and it was $87 to WI and $149 to O'Hare. If you rent a car it is easier to get in and out of WI (I'm told) and the drive isn't really any longer when traffic is taken into consideration. We flew in and out of O'hare and I'd avoid it if I could!! Also plan to arrive on Wed at the latest and stay till Sunday evening at the earliest if at all possible!! That will allow you to go to the Meet and Greet and be available for your sailor if they get lucky and don't fly out till Sunday!!
