While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

sending pictures to recruit
My son told me today as he was leaving that I cannot send any pictures UNTIL he tells me it's okay to do so, it's something they have to earn. I didn't recall reading anything like that, does anyone have info on this?

Yikes! I did not know this and just sent my SR 2 pics I printed with my 2nd letter to him. Already in the mail so cannot retrieve! I hope he does not have to do 100 push ups or something. I thought pics were OK! He left for BC on March 1st and other than the one short call from his cell phone on the bus at RTC I have heard nothing from him. His recruiter gave me his address yesterday.

my son just graduated and pictures are ok. If the RTCs think the envelope is too bulky, they might open it. Stay away from colored envelopes and stickers, etc.

You can send anything you want; colored envelopes, pictures, cut outs from the news paper, their FB pages printed out, etc. Just no food or anything like that. Stickers are fine, but they're better off if you put them inside the envelope. :) My husband graduated last year and I am friends with an RDC. I have talked to him about it and it's perfectly fine for you to send pictures. In fact they highly encourage it because it helps the recruits have a bit of home with them and it helps them to concentrate better. :)

I sent my hubby a print out from the internet and he told me it's not allowed, so I think it depends on each divison's RDC and how strict they are.

My son (into week 5 of bootcamp) said he loved the pics (photocopies) I sent of his new nephew and the printout I found online about "What to expect at bootcamp" got passed around and they had a laugh. He is also the Petty Officer for mail and didn't tell me it wasn't allowed, so I think it's fine!

My SR has asked for more pictures. Also, she wants a print out of her FB page and I buy magazines that have articles about her favorite tv shows then copy the article and write my letter on the other side. She says that the other girls love to read the articles when they haven't received any mail.

My son Nik is on the plane to Chicago as I type this. Man today was tougher than yesterday!! I've already been writing as I've heard so much about how it helps them. And all his friends are waiting for the address. Can't wait til boot camp is over!!!!

What we and others have done/are doing, is simply inserting the pictures "onto" the letters we are sending. The last letter, which I mailed today, has nothing but pictures on the final page of the document. It keeps the envelopes from being bulky and puts more pictures onto one document. You can also create a photo "collage" on the page, which is a really neat gift for them. They fold nice and flat and are much easier to keep neat and organized, than sending individual pictures printed on photo paper. Just in case the envelope gets wet, I also wrapped the letter in "Glad, Press n Seal", for extra protection. Again, it is not at all bulky and will keep the pictures on the letters from getting wet. :-) P.S. I've never heard that they can't have pictures.

print pics on printer paper and write letters on the reverse. They don't have much space & will eventually have to throw out letters, so it's not worth "real" pics. Three pieces of 8.5 X 11 paper folded into thirds & put into a business envelope will be ok with one stamp. I bought a Sudoku book at the dollar store and would send a couple pages a week, with the correct key from the back, so my son could share if he wanted to. In one letter he said he drew a chess board on the back of his notepad, and then made pieces from cardboard. I also copied chapters from Sole Survivor, one of his favorite books, and could get 2 pages per side, for 4 pages per paper.

I would be careful sending stuff to the address the recruiter because the recruiter that my husband had gave me the wrong address and so I sent letters to the wrong place. :( The letter with his address will come in about 1 1/2 weeks after they left, or sooner. It's 3 weeks before they'll start getting mail anyways, (or around 2 1/2, but no sooner) so even if you send them out now, they won't get them until around that time. Hope that information helps.

My heart goes out to all of you. My sailor graduated in January and is now in A school. I was able to sent photos while he was at RTC. It all depends of that divisions RDC. Some allow certain things and some don't. Clear things with your recruits before you send anything. And please do not send anything with stickers or colored envelopes and NO MUSICAL CARDS. It's my understanding that this is a big NO-NO while in boot camp. Things get better once they get to A school. Hang in there. Graduation will be here before you know it. Good Luck!
