I received the "kid in a box" and all I got was dirty clothes!  No note, no information, just sweaty socks, jeans and converse.  Should I not have received his PIR date and a note from him?

Nope not yet! Do not panic!! That letter does not come in the box...it comes on its own about a week later! Just be happy you got the box! I never did. My son failed to mention he donated everything!
I got my son's box today and I felt the same way. No letter, but we called the recruiter and was able to get his address. They are the first ones to get it first. Give them a call. At least he will be able to get a few letters from you. I sent out three today and I have ten more that I have accrued.
Also, you will get his address, but realize he won't be able to write for 2 or 3 weeks. They can only write on Sundays. They also won't start getting your letters for a week or 2. My son received 5 letters in one day 2 1/2 weeks after he arrived there. The separation is on purpose. They are fighting homesickness, and just like at summer camp, don't dwell on how much you miss them. Be positive and up beat, and talk about the things at home, things that will make a connection.
NO same for me we should receive form letter with address to write and possible PIR dates in about a week after the "kid box" from what I am told. I can't wait!

we received the kid in a box yesterday... today we received "the letter" with his PIR date, address, and a short note.
have hope it may not take a week.
My son leaves March 2nd for bc-I cant believe the time is fast approaching. It is really starting to hit me now. I'm so glad I found this site, it has been so helpful.
Renee, I know exactly how you feel. My son left last Monday, only his flight was cancelled because of snow closing O'hare in Chicago. It has been the worst week I have ever endured. We got a 20 second call on the night he got to Chicaco, telling us that he got there okay and that we would receive a box in a few days and a letter in two weeks. I actually got his box today, but yesterday was a holiday, so I would say a week. I held his clothes like I would hold a new born baby. I feel better now that I have received the dreaded box. I was able to send 3 of the 10 letters that I had written to him. Between his fiancee and I, we had about 20 letters.I find that it is comforting to be around her too, because she knows how I feel. It's also a very good way to get to know you future daughter in law. Just hand in there Renee and stary strong. The first week, I am told they are doing a ton of paperwork to process in. These sites and groups were so useful to me. So stayed signed in so we can be a major support for each other. My son is on ship 03 BIV 145. Anyone else?
Be very, very patient. The information will come but it does take it's time. We are here if you need to vent.
Thank you!
Ahhhhh......no, not yet. I have heard that a very FEW kids are able to slip a note in, maybe if they know about the box before hand....but I didn't get a note either....just got what you did. Just be thankful that it was in the WINTER when it's cold, because these boxes must get pretty ripe in the summer time! with those dirty clothes :-) You'll get the PIR date and other info in the form letter soon. Just remember...he is being well taken care of....yes, it might be a bit rough right now...but he is being fed good food, and has a good bed to sleep in. This is your time to relax and let the Navy take charge....I know, easier SAID than DONE! The "box" is one of the very hard parts...the rest will be a bit easier!
Thanks for your kind words. It is so hard letting go. He is my oldest and was the only for 6.5 years. I am trying to "snap out of it" and get on with it, but it is all I can do to make myself do my regular routine. I am so glad I found this site where others know how it feels!
Got the LETTER!!! she's on Ship 3 Divisin 148 Grad date April 9, 2010 anyone else have that same thing? I'm sooo happy now I can make plans!
