My son left for the Navy on July 10, 2011. He's my only son and I'm dealing with many emotions right now. I'm trying to find out if anyone has any information to offer that would ease all the worries I feel.

I am glad this site is helping you. It certainly has been helpful to me! At two weeks into it, I have to keep reminding myself that she has it a lot worse than I do. Some days are good, some days...not so good. But it won't be long before we are watching them march in at graduation! And Doreen is so right, the videos help a lot.
Good Morning MySonMyWorld, Welcome to N4M! You will experience many emotions during this 8 weeks. My suggestions are to start writing letters to your SR now. Write to him everyday. When you get the address send them all to him. I wrote my SR everyday. He said everyone loves the letters. They are the highlight of their days. Just write about everything that is going on at home. My SR said that he loved hearing the stories of what was happening at home. Don't send any colored envelopes or musical cards. I downloaded pictures and then pasted them to the letter that I was writing so he could have pictures from home.
My Sailors PIR is this friday! I can't wait to see him!!! It is a long 8 weeks and this website has helped me so much. Read the posts and get together with other Moms from his division. Also look on the facebook page US Navy Recruit Command. They post pictures and have a trivia question on Tuesdays. If you win the trivia question they will post a picture of your SR's division. One of our Mom's won and we got to see a group picture of our boys. It was awesome. Good luck and God Bless you and your family. And Pray, Pray, Pray! :)
Hi ... my daughter (youngest ... older daughter married 2 years ago and not living in the area) left on 7/6. It's hard right now and the house is so empty! I have been writing letters and so has her sister that we will mail as soon as we get an address, nothing yet. My question is about pictures, can we send pictures with the letters?
DonnaB --
The safest way to send pictures is to scan them into the body of your letter. My sailor loved pictures. He wanted them to be small as they don't have much room. I scanned them in at first and later would include a single picture collage sometimes. I did them at Walgreens. A 4 x 6 was 39 cents. I know some were given a hard time about too many printed pictures. Hope this helps. Every RDC is different.
Donna I would bet that your daughter and mine will be in the same group. Mine left MEPS on 07/06. Did you get your box today?
I have written a few lettersin word because hand writing is difficult for me, and inserted photos into the bottom of the letter. I like this method because you can adjust the size of the photos and add several photos to one letter. Plus what I have read on here they like to give the recruits a little bit of hassle if there is anything too noticable about the letter. So don't write anything extra on the outside of the envelope and try not to make it too thick. :)
The last thing I want is to get her in trouble so I will go ahead and just embed the pics into the letter. No big deal really, we were at a lake last weekend and a friend of ours was playing 'fetch' with our golden retriever ... he had her hauling in these huge 'logs' and I got some great pictures ... Steph would love them.
No box yet but our mail goes to our PO box and no one has been to the post office yet today so maybe. Our mail is notoriously slow so I am not getting my hopes up too high but maybe. Steph left on the 6th from Portland, do you have your letter yet?
