Lorraine B.-
Mission Valley is a great location in my opinion. The apartment that we live at is GREAT! Lots and lots of military presence but not too much where it feels like you are living in military housing :)
The apartment is called "The Promenade." It is very close to Downtown San Diego and close to the base. Also, Mission Valley is near the beaches of San Diego unlike Chula Vista where it's location is more inland. In Mission Valley you get more of a cooler breeze in the area. Here is the website to the apartment if you want to check it our:

Mission Valley is a great area if you asked me. Chula Vista is more for people with families. I think if you have a young sailor that want the best of SD, Mission Valley might suite them best :)
We are also near two of the major Shopping Malls in all of San Diego :)
So, with Mission Valley you will have easy access to the following: beach, 2 malls, major freeways, and you will be in the middle of south and north of SD so travel is not a problem :)
Another apartment that I know a lot of military go with is La Mirage. This is in Mission Gorge. Mission Gorge is a street over Mission Valley :)

Hello, my name is Jamie and I am a local in San Diego. To Lorraine B.: it depends on where your daughter wants to live and what kind of environment she wants. I used to live in Chula Vista, my mom and family still lives there. Just a year ago I moved to Mission Valley which is north of Chula Vista. I live in Mission Valley with my boyfriend who is in the NAVY. Traffic is pretty bad if you are coming from Chula Vista going to base early in the morning. Also, there is some distance compared to where we live which is about 15-30 minutes from the base depending on which base. Let me know if you have questions :)

my son PIR 09/10, so looking forward to seing him. He also was DEP since 07/2009 and arrived to BC on 07/15/2010. He's doing well.

Just a quick intro. We are in Bakersfield, my son Brandon just left for BC on Monday. He was in DEP for over a year and was sure he was going into the military since the summer before his Junior year (he says he was sure since he was a little boy though). My husband is ex-Navy, my dad was in the Army, and there are other family members so I guess it was inevitable one of my boys would end up in the military. I'm really proud of him but was totally unprepared for how hard it would hit me when he actually left. Lucky for me I still have a 17 year old son and a 9 year old daughter at home. We also have two kittens we found in a field that take a lot of attention so I still have some babies to take care of LOL. Also some big dogs, rabbits, chickens and ducks since we live in the country and have sort of a mini hobby farm. One thing I really miss about my son being gone is him helping me haul 50 lb feed sacks and bails of hay out of my car. Stupid thing to miss I know, but it made me proud how hard working and thoughtful he has become.
