Well my boyfriend's in A school in VA right now. Has been for a few weeks. I feel like i should be the awesome girlfriend and send him something awesome. But I totally have no idea. :/ I sent him a care package for his birthday- I call it "a taste of the midwest", included caribou coffee, green bay packer travel mug, reg mug, a copy of my favorite midwestern book, and a small jar of my family's home grown honey. :)  Still. I feel like I could've given that to my dad. What can/should I give to my bf? I'm really not good at this stuff in general, and the fact that he's far away and I'd have to ship it is just making it that much harder.

I wouldn't overthink it!  A school is relatively short, so don't send too much stuff that he'll have to try and carry or ship to his first duty station. They study hard in A school, so having homemade cookies and brownies to share with the others is always a hit and makes you popular - believe me, they love it :)  Pack them in a plastic Rubbermaid-type box you can get at dollar stores that fit into the large-size priority mailing box, tuck in some Skittles and M&M's (also popular with our sailors), some encouraging notes from friends & family and you'll have a care package he'll be very happy to have.

That sounds super lovely. Good idea about the rubbermaid box! Thank you so much!

And you will be acknowledged as the clever (for not sending tons of stuff to deal with), thoughtful and caring gf (who thinks of others as well as your bf) - win-win!  :)  When he reaches his first duty station, you can find out and send more about what he needs, from desk organizer stuff to over-the-door hooks, magazines and iTunes gift cards, just for starters :)  But right now, it's all about study, study, study.

One more thought - since you put it this way, don't send anything you WOULDN'T send your dad right now!  Your bf is in pretty much a group situation at A school, and very personal stuff might be inadvertently seen by other eyes.  Wait till next duty station, and even then, keep it in mind ;)

Also if shipping is hard for you right now, a card with an iTunes gift card tucked in is always used and appreciated.  There are great apps that apply to what they're studying (anatomy & physiology for corpsmen, example) so you might even research and suggest some for your boyfriend's rate.

Haha! Good call :)

I hate sending gift cards to people...not my thing. At the moment I'm thinking about baking a pie. :)As for aids for studying...I have no idea. He isn't allowed to talk about his job. :/ like at all. Thanks for the advice though :)  At the moment I'm thinking about sending him some university apparel from my school. :)

Pie, great!  I agree about gift cards, but ones you can use online are ok in this instance.  Remember he won't be there long, storage is next to nil and he'll likely be carrying whatever you send on his back in a seabag when he leaves or will have to find a way to ship, so go light!

Hi! My boyfriend is in A School right now too. I always send homemade cookies in ziploc bags stuffed inside rubbermaid containers and like Marcy said those are always a huge hit. He has no room to store anything, especially since all my letters from boot camp are filling up his drawers ;) so I keep the care packages simple with just food (jerky, candy, etc.) and cds. His favorite thing that I've sent him so far has actually been jiff peanut butter lol if you figure out a way to send pie I would love to know! I'm always afraid that if I send something like that it will fall apart. For fall, I'm going to try and make these banana nut bread jars :) http://10282011navywifey.blogspot.com/2012/07/mason-jar-baking.html

Ashleigh - Thanks for that recipe and that blog, what a find!!

I made these: single serving pie in a jar from a website I love, OurBestBites.com.  You can get the jars at Ace Hardware.  What I learned is you can just press pieces of pie dough into the jar patchwork-style; use chilled butter flavor shortening for the crust; and keep the crust chilled so it's easy to work with.  For the "topper" I cut out little hearts, so sweet!!  I used canned apple pie filling and added chopped dried apricots (softened in hot water) for color and to make it chunkier.  Here's my pic, I love how they turned out  :)  Michael's has tiny heart cookie cutters in the aisle with things for decorating wedding cakes.

Those are so adorable! I'm so excited to try and make them!! Thanks for sharing :)

Okay! This looks like it will work! :D Because sending a whole pie was quite inconvenient and did not work very well. I don't suggest trying. But this looks absolutely do-able. Thanks so much!
