When my son 1st got to San Diego the ship was Underway (out @ sea doing exercises) for 2 weeks.
So he was housed with 4 other Sailors who were new & one was just getting out.

They assigned my son to Guard the mainfate checking ID's. Until the ship returned.

Also at 1st my son did not have a car and rode the Metropolitan (electric train).
There's a station right near gate & barracks.
He went everywhere.
After his 1st deployment he saved up $ and purchased his 1st car.

Also in regards to visiting, we had learn the hard way that you cannot always plan or count on Making way in advance cause you never know when they will be on Underway.

They do a lot of out to sea exercises either by weeks or up to a month.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Liberty. I can answer some of your questions.
1. My son does not have a car in San Diego, but he said that it's nice to have.
2.They should be home by than.
3.My son came to the ship during last deployment and they flew him over there. It's all depending on how badly they need person with his specialty on the ship. When my son came they were short handed and he worked hard.
4. In San Diego he can be housed on the ship for a while until it will be a space available in the baraks. My son lived in the baraks for a year or so and than they gave him a 2 bedroom appartment to share with another sailor on the base, which is very nice.
I hope it helps.

Congratulations to your son Katiem!

Question 1)... Does a sailor need a car if stationed in San Diego? I am assuming that the answer is yes, but want to get opinions.

Question 2) I would like to find out (without breaching Security) if the ship should be in San Diego in March/April. We would like to visit on spring Break, but we have no idea if he will be there.

Question 3) Since the ship is currently deployed, is it likely that my son will be sent to the ship when he goes to San Diego (Late November) or will they have him work on base until it returns? I have no idea how any of this works!

Question 4) Do they house these young men on the ship when it is in port or at the base? If they live on the ship is there parking for a car right there or do they have to shuttle to parking?

Thanks to anyone who might be able to help me with some of these questions!

Got an email from my son last night, finally.  All is good, said he has been so busy!  He told me he got nominated for Sailor of the Quarter! <3

I agree with you Liberty, I'm also in awe of all of them!

Hi again everyone. After I posted the other day I watched some videos on You Tube about the ship. I should not have watched the one showing the huge waves! Then I saw the update about the Typhoon which caused me to have a few minutes of panic! I have to admit, I had never thought about that scenario! This is all so new to me and I am working through it every day. I told my son about that post and he said "Well, yes mom.....there are a lot of things that can happen, but I'll be fine." These young men and women are so brave and I am in awe of all of them. Please know that all of your children are in my prayers.

Just got an email from my sailor. In spite of their troubles, he sounds happier than he has since they left. It's amazing how much such a simple message can make.
