Hi CT moms, was wondering if anyone had someone leaving today for bootcamp. We left my son with his recruiter last evening to take him up to MEPS and I have been crying since. I need to hold it together for my family, but I'm having a tough time. That was the hardest thing I ever had to do was to leave him like that. I have such mixed emotions right now, but I know this has been such a brave and smart decision on his part and I am so incredibly proud of him.
My sailor has been in for almost 7 years, and I remember well the crying and intense emotions of his leaving. First, know that what you are experiencing is grief, and you will cry like crazy. It WILL pass, I promise! I was a total basket case for a week, and then I took a day for myself, and pulled myself together. To this day, my son and I joke that boot camp was harder on me than on him! One important tip: that 30-second phone call has to be to a land line (unless it's changed) -- I sat at my friend's house for hours that first night, with my cell phone in my hand, then drove home with the cell phone in my hand, and pulled into the driveway just as the house phone stopped ringing. It turned out that collect calls won't go through to a cell phone. The recruiter was just plain pissed when I called him (of course, I was ripping mad so I wasn't exactly sweet to him).
Anyway, welcome to the club, every Navy mom has been through the crying and eventually returned to normal :) And the parents of kids going off to college, who think they can relate, haven't got a clue! Luckily, there is Navy for Moms -- it didn't exist when my son left, so I felt very alone. And all the pride you are feeling is 100% justified ~ congratulations, Navy mom, you raised a good kid!
Welcome navy mom. My son left for BC 16 months ago and I like you fell apart! Just know it gets easier ever day. When you go to his graduation you'll be so delighted to see the growth and maturity in your sailor.
In the meantime be strong for your family and son.
Another wonderful place to go to talk to Navy moms is on facebook. Just enter navy mom in the search box.
