My son starts A school in Fort Sam next week to be trained as a Corpsman... He's looking ahead and thinking about what he'll do after that. He's expressed an interest in going to C school for subs (Let me just say right now that half of what I say, I don't understand so feel free to correct or explain or use the correct terminology :-) ).
My questions are... what are the pros and cons of that job? Is it even possible for him since he's just out of basic training? I thought I read you have to have 10 years of service to be a Corpsman on a sub. How long are deployments on a sub? Any advice if that's the route he wants to go??
Here's a good article regarding Independent Duty Corpsmen and submarines: http://www.navy.mil/navydata/cno/n87/usw/issue_31/idc.html
The road to becoming an IDC is demanding to say the least; and is open to corpsmen E-5 and above.
