We are planning on going to our son's graduation next week. I need information from anyone that has attended one. Will we have to go through the same red tape as PIR? All information about this event would be greatly appreciated.

First you need to be there EARLY - reason being your son will have to be there to help you get through security - Gate 3. The reason I say early is because the girls and guys are told to report where ever at say 7:30 and if you are outside the gates late you will miss out. He will have to follow his orders. I do know of people who came too late and missed it because the son had to go. Once he gets you in you will proceed to the right to the school parking lot (also their living quarters are there also). You will go in the building and he will go line up or whatever. You can check out all the cool info on Corpsmen History - etc.

Pictures are encouraged and they will tell you to get up and take pictures while they talk. It is an awesome graduation. Not on the scale of PIR - this is small and intimate. You will meet his instructors and all his Corpsman buds that he has bonded with. After PIR - they all must come and sit down - you can stay right in the back - and they are given their final orders - plane tickets - etc. Enjoy it is quite an accomplishment what they have achieved in such a short time - they are able to save a life - how many people do you know who can do that?
PS - I stayed on base at the Navy Inn - inexpensive and great room with a continental breakfast each morning. My son was able to walk over to my room and I was able to walk to the Nex and places they hung out.
I would just have to agree with Gloria - her description of the events is right on. Do be EARLY. The Navy Inn was great. Depending on his orders your son will be able to spend quite a bit of time with you if he is not leaving GL immediately. Enjoy!
Also, the time you have extra can be spent by looking at the displays. They are really awesome, Corpsman equipment and uniforms, etc from older wars, and also in the hallway there are pics haning on the wall of the Corpsman that have received the Congressional Medal of Honor and their stories...really impressive. You might want to put some of the pics on your site for those parents that can't be there...I'm sure they'd appreciate it. Hug your Corpsman for all of us! Congrats Mom.
If you go to the Main Gate visitor center the night before and meet your soon to be Corpsman, you can get a car pass and you do not have to wait for your "nervous" Graduate the morning of Graduation. Again Early is magic.
Park by the "Dorms" as you enter Gate # 3, turn right on "D" other wise known as "The Chosen Ave".
but you can check that out the night before.
thanks for the information..will be leaving wednesday for the "wonderful" 13 hour drive to see my son..only good thing about that drive..lol..we will be staying at the ramada again, was nice and i know what its like...looking forward to seeing my son, has been since christmas...=)
