OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Just getting in the door
I'm sure my questions are old ones but I cannot seem to find the answers when I search (or I get conflicting ones or ones that are out of date) so I apologize up front for my ignorance.
My son will be a senior in high school this year. He is thinking about becoming a Navy Corpsman. That is the only job in the Navy that interests him and he hopes to complete the FMTB training as well. Here's the thing...I've been told or read that the Navy is overmanned and therefore doesn't have a lot open right now so you may have to "go back" to MEPS everyday over and over and over for months before you may "luck" into getting a job/rate. Then you will have to go back over and over to get assigned a date to attend boot camp. Then I was told that even if you are assigned it the Navy will not guarantee a job/rate. So even if your scores are fine and you go to MEPS and they "assign" you to HM it's not really a sure thing. I was even told that once you get through boot camp if there don't happen to be any slots open in A school when you finish then you are out of luck - you won't get to go and will be assigned to a different job or sent to the fleet as un-designated. So essentially you can get all the way through boot just to be told nothing is available even though you were assigned it at MEPS?

Hi Whirligig,
Sounds like your son is anticipating signing up for the delayed entry program (DEP). He will select a job/rate as part of this process and that will be his when he attends MEPS if he's met all the requirements of his DEP enlistment. His recruiter can explain all of this to him. The navy is being very selective now, so not all rates may be available. His recruiter should help guide him. If he's assigned corpsman in DEP it should still be his at MEPS if he's met all the requirements. He'll still need to pass bootcamp, and then will need to successfully complete corpsman school (A School). Orders for after A School, like FMTB/C Schools/clinic or other assignments aren't made until midway thru A School. -

Vettespace is clearly on target...Currently manning is at the Navy's picking and they can pick and choose who they want since the economy has hit its limit. Yes, it is very simular to what it was like in 1985, (no opportunities so the only means of surival was to spend some time in US Military and as we all know life is cyclic. Actually all the branches have reached their limit and with a redirecting of DoD funding their are managing their funding more wisely. I work for the AF and they are seeking various ways of reducing costs and if some one is not meeting the standards they are gone. If your son really wants to be in the military he has to show initiative and be persistaint. He will learn quickly once you reach BC the learning process only begins. I wish your son the best of luck and like I have reminded my boys since they were babies "if there is a will there is a way".

Hi Whiligig (love your screen name!) - Last year my son was in a similar position as your son's. He really wanted to be a Navy Corpsman especially interested in FMF. He talked to the recruiter, took the ASVAB, scored well, talked to the recruiter again, and was told the Navy was being picky and there might not be a slot for Corpsman. He went to MEPS and was told he was QNJ (qualified, no job) with no idea when there would be an opening for Corpsman. Needless to say he was disappointed, but he was persistent and didn't let the MEPS folks talk him into accepting another rating. He really wanted to be a Navy Corpsman so talked to the recruiter who said he could join as a reservist because there were openings for reserve Corpsman. He agreed, went to MEPS, signed the contract, and entered DEP where he spent about 7 months. He will be graduating boot camp 13 AUG and has been told that he will be going to Corpsman A-school the following week. Bottom line: talk to a recruiter, take the ASVAB (no matter what rating you want, you have to take the ASVAB), and be persistant.

Thanks! As always trying to navigate the many posts to get info and saw this one. How is your sailor doing? Any advice you can provide for me or for me to pass to my son would be much appreciated.
