Here is the Wiki page on the Corpsman rate, and specific information on FMF: US Navy Hospital Corpsman
Hope this helps! If you go to the home page for this group, you can see a video of the FMTB training they get in order to be FMF corpsmen. This comes after boot camp and Corps School, aka A School.
ok thank you to everyone
Are HM's allowed to choose to go FMF in A school?
please check the links above the discussion area on the main page for links to more information on any of these areas of training and qualifications.
Here's the time line: A School for Corpsman. At that point, many are sent to FMTB, which basically is being trained to go "greenside" (serve with a Marine battalion as a corpsman). Those who do not go directly to a Marine unit will either be assigned another C school (check the link for METC) or assigned to a base/ship, whatever and wherever the Navy needs them. But, as already trained field corpsman in FMTB, they can be called to serve greenside at any point in their career. Those corpsmen who do not go to FMTB usually go to other C schools.
FMF is a qualification, not a school. It is earned while a corpsman is serving with a Marine battalion, over a period of several months to a year. Not all corpsman serving with the Marines will qualify. It's not easy.
My son volunteered for FMTB 6 years ago, I don't know how they do it now.
