My son is shipping out for RTC soon. He has 2 full years at a junior college and 1 quarter at a university towards his BS. He will be going in as (E3) CTT AEF which is 6yr. He is seriously considering renegotiating his contract to a 4yr. CTT before he ships to RTC. He has talked to many current CTTs who said that the 4yr. plan allows you greater options of duty stations (aircrew, subs, squadrons, flag ships etc). He would really like to go aircrew but he knows it's a tough billet to get. It's a dilemma because with the extra training he would make E4 after AEF school and any additional skills the Navy teaches him will surely help him down the line. He would still be able test for E4 three months after A & D school as a 4yr. based on rate-in-time and it's currently undermanned so it should be no problem. Techincaly he would actually make E4 faster by my calculations because getting through A, C & D school for AEF will take at least 10-11 months at best and 4yr. CTT out out in 4.5 months. I've read more cons for 6yr. and pros for 4yr. My son doesn't have a electronic background and wants to pursue an Intell (one of the 3 letter agencies) or law enforcement career after serving. He may want to cross rate to CTR to get better skills for overall Intell field and he cannot do that as a CTT AEF. He is looking forward to going next month but wants to make the right choice now so he won't be struck later.
For you active duty 4yr.and 6yr. CTT guys what is your input / experience?
