My son just graduated from DLI - and his friend was married and the couple lived off base. The base is crowded and they seem to want married couples to live off base. Will you be in monterey? There are lovely military housing units available. Let me know where you will be.

I can't remember how long it takes to phase up, but I know it's relatively quick compared to some of the schools.  And as the base is crowded, sailors are strongly encouraged to move off base.  The BAH will cover housing, but just barely!  My daughter lived in a little apartment on Alice Street (between Prescott and David Streets) and the apartment complex always seemed to have openings because of DLI students coming and going.  She could walk to base (although it's a hilly walk!).  She shared with another DLI student, so between the two of them they had money left over.

There is no on base married housing to my knowledge.  There is lots of appartments and rentals very near by though.  I've heard the married sailors are the first ones they move off base and into housing.  DLI is very crowded and the turn over is frequent with the various graduations (and washouts) that occur monthly.

Sorry to not have more info for you.  Hopefully someone will be able to better answer your questions soon!  Congrats to your husband!

LOL, I posted my response before reading the first two...........guess we all do agree that DLI is crowded!  ;-)
Thanks for the info.  its making my mind spin alittle slower. lol and yes we will be in monterey.... Ive heard that it is a nice place to live.  before we got a lot of info on weather or not Id be moving with him I looked at housing cost out there and it looks like alot of money.  lol  but Id do whatever to get to be closer to my hubby!!

where do you find info on off base housing costs?

from what ive been told there arent any housing costs on base.  but i could be wrong.  i think that if you live on base its included you just dont get the BHA.  I could be wrong lol
Well, you aren't likely to get on base housing at the Presidio of Monterey, especially if he is E-3 or below. It's the Army's smallest base, and there isn't much housing available. There is military housing nearby in the old Fort Ord. I wouldn't know much about it, but there are a few military students who live out there. You may be able to find an apartment cheaper off base if you look well enough, though, as the guys at Fort Ord charge you something like 1600 a month (all utilities included) or all of your BAH... whichever is smaller. He'll get a brief about it when he gets to Monterey. If you go apartment hunting, don't get an apartment out in Salinas. It's cheaper for a reason.
He found a house out there yesterday!!!  thank god!!  I didnt ask where it was or for pictures and I dont care I just want to get out there and be with him..... yay!!! Im moving!!
