Monica,
My husband was a nuke for the first ten years we were married. So I got to see the nuke school thing first-hand. And it sure seems to me my CTI is putting in just as many hours of work as my husband did. He'll certainly be at it just about as long as my hubby was in nuke school. So I say go if you can. It's a once-in-a lifetime thing. Plus, if your sailor has completed their associate's degree, you get to see them awarded their degree at the same time.
And I don't know why there are some contradictions in the information given about our CTIs. My son, also, has a DLI T-shirt. But his doesn't say his language on it. But, yet, he said they tell them not to let unfamiliar people know they're at DLI and not to talk about what language they're doing. I guess my thinking is tell people as little specific information as possible. When we were at Union Station waiting for our train to New York City when my sailor was home on leave last week, this very nice lady sat down at our table at lunch and started making small talk. You know, the where are you from kind of stuff. I told her my daughter and I were from Virginia and my son was living in California. Then starts then thousand questions. What are you doing in California. Where are you going to school, etc. My son was obviously uncomfortable and was trying to be as cryptic as possible. But the point is if I had just said he was from Virginia like the rest of us, there wouldn't have been a problem. And believe you me, I got grief from my son later for it.
Thanks for the heads up Lisa. I thought about putting my son's language after I did it. I am new to this and have to remember to be more careful. One other mom noted that the RTC's monitor these blogs and will punish SR's as a result.
KC's mom, my daughter said Graduation is a big thing and most parents go, she said between PIR and graduation she would pick graduation but thats just her.
wow, Lisa- that's exciting!! My oldest (KC) is turning 21 next month and my youngest is 8 1/2, plus one in middle school. KC started college on the day my youngest started kindergarden. It just never ends for me!! hahahaa. Keeps me young, I suppose. I've been planning on going out to the graduation, but my son and my husband both thinks it's a bad idea. Even my parents told me I shouldnn't go. I just don't get it. Just curious if there is anyone else that skipped DLI graduation.
Go with your mom gut, KC! I understand family situations may keep some from attending. But there's no way I'd let my son talk me out of it. We're in Virginia, so I can totally empathize with the long travel. Between the three kids, they're going to bleed me dry around graduation. My CTI will graduate then a month later my youngest graduates from high school and the NEXT day my daughter graduates from college. THREE graduations in a month. Uggg.
Welcome, Parice! I have a question for any moms whose child has graduated DLI. Did you, or do you know of any families that did NOT attend the graduation? My son keeps telling me not to bother coming and wait til he gets to his next location ( much closer to us). Just wondering if many families don't make the trip out there. I live in Maryland so it's a lot of effort for us to get there ( I still have younger children at home). I know that is why he is pushing me not to come- but I would like some feedback.
PatriceFinn1, I think you'll find most moms don't openly talk about what language their sailor is studying. Some see it as a potential security issue. You'll find that the CTI field requires sailors (and moms) to be more secretive about what's going on in their career. But hopefully someone will private message you if their child is in the same language as yours. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that your child's language could change. Every sailor that got to DLI in my sailor's group had their language changed when they got to CA. Sometimes they need to fill up a group that is about to begin, etc. Best of luck to your son. I hope he loves DLI as much as mine does.
Hi. Just found out today my son has been assigned to Farsey in Monterey. He ha 3 weeks left of boot camp. Would love to hear from other moms who have kids in same language or can give me insight into what lies ahead.
Yes, I was talking about the Army lodging on the DLI base. The location can't be beat, but by the time you leave you feel like you have been. (Beaten, that is)
This was not the Navy Lodge on base we were at , it is off base about ten mins away from base, it is right next to the navy housing for officers, our beds were wonderful, better than the onesw at the disney hotel we spent a couple of days at.
