Does any one know specifically what recruits come to Monterrey;s A School for? My son is CTI and believes he will be in A school in Monterrey but I can't find that on any list. Did I miss it - or could he be confused about where he might be going? Any info?
Hi there, I am new to the CTI group. My daughter will be reporting there after PIR on 06/08/12. I am trying to get a jump on what I need to know about the DLI experience.
He has orders for Monterey Oct.'12. I'm anticipating... a nice mom sent me to this site too. ttU later, when we're officially moved from SD up the coast.
Spent 4 days last week in Monterey with our daughter. She lives in paradise! No wonder she loves it so much. We did sooooo much touristy stuff- it was so fun. We did the aquarium, 17 mile drive, Sunday brunch at Clint Eastwood's ranch in Carmel, hiking in Big Sur, San Francisco and last but not least- a whale watching tour. It was all great except for the whale watching tour- it was foggy and the seas were choppy so I vomited for 2.5 hours. Oh, if you eat on Fisherman's Warf in Monterey, apparently you can ask for the local's menu.
My favorites: grab a sandwich to share (huge!) at Compagno's (see Dee's post below) and head down to Big Sur and sit on a rock on a point and gaze at the ocean. (Ask your child about the "secret handshake" that garners a discount.)
And my favorite of all--take your child to a restaurant where the owners/waitstaff speak your child's language--and just sit back and revel in the conversation that will flow and the delight you will see in the native speakers as they talk with your child. You will be so proud of how much your child has learned.
Tammy, you are in for a treat! That is such a beautiful part of the country. I agree with Debbie that 17 Mile Drive is a must. You pay a fee of about $10 but it is so worth it. Once you are in Carmel, there is a very pretty beach at the end of Ocean Avenue where locals bring their dogs. Our family has been a couple of times and we bring a picnic lunch. Tommy's Wok in Carmel is really good Chinese food but crowded! The aquarium in Monterey is amazing and well worth the price of admission. They do offer some sort of military discount and also have a great restaurant that you can see the otters and sea lions play while you eat. Have fun and enjoy your son!
My son just bought a car Saturday!! He is in heaven now! Freedom!! hahaha. Yesterday he drove 73 miles to go to a Persian restaraunt! So happy for him. The problem he's going to run into is getting to the DMV. It's not like he can take a day off and get all the paperwork taken care of like we can!!
@Tammy, enjoy your visit with your son- I have NO advice to give bc I haven't made it up there yet!!
