Does any one know specifically what recruits come to Monterrey;s A School for?  My son is CTI and believes he will be in A school in Monterrey but I can't find that on any list.  Did I miss it - or could he be confused about where he might be going?  Any info?

Hi there, I am new to the CTI group. My daughter will be reporting there after PIR on 06/08/12. I am trying to get a jump on what I need to know about the DLI experience.

He has orders for Monterey Oct.'12.  I'm anticipating... a nice mom sent me to this site too.  ttU later, when we're officially moved from SD up the coast.

Spent 4 days last week in Monterey with our daughter.  She lives in paradise!  No wonder she loves it so much.  We did sooooo much touristy stuff- it was so fun.  We did the aquarium, 17 mile drive, Sunday brunch at Clint Eastwood's ranch in Carmel, hiking in Big Sur, San Francisco and last but not least- a whale watching tour.  It was all great except for the whale watching tour- it was foggy and the seas were choppy so I vomited for 2.5 hours.  Oh, if you eat on Fisherman's Warf in Monterey, apparently you can ask for the local's menu.

Well I made it and had a beautiful day. I got here about 11:00, ate lunch on the beach, visited some shops on Cannery row, got my husband the Harley shirt I promised him and spent more time on the beach until Gar got out of class. We went to Rosines for a wonderful supper and talked forever. I'm amazed how much my baby has grown up and I'm so proud of man he's becoming. I got to see the base and meet some of his friends...more amazing young men. It was hard, but I left him on base to study for his tests he has today. It looks like I'm going to have another beautiful day today. I'm planning my whale watching tour and possibly the aquarium. I now understand why my son is so in love with this place.

Thanks so much for all the great suggestions. I'm going to make the best of this time with Gar despite the weather. I am currently in Bakersfield and hope to be in Monterey by noon or shortly after. I really dreaded the long drive from Indiana to Monterey. I've never done anything like this by myself, but I've been very pleasantly surprised. I (halfway jokingly) told my husband I think I missed my calling... I should have been a trucker instead of a teacher! I love driving across this beautiful country. It is amazing the diversity of the land- god's beautiful artwork. Then to spend some quality time with my son, just tops it all off. I've always been so close with my son and we have not been able to spend unhurried time together since before he went to boot camp last July. He will be in class most of today and tomorrow, but we will have all day Saturday and Sunday and I will fly back to Indiana late Sunday night.

My favorites: grab a sandwich to share (huge!) at Compagno's (see Dee's post below) and head down to Big Sur and sit on a rock on a point and gaze at the ocean. (Ask your child about the "secret handshake" that garners a discount.)

And my favorite of all--take your child to a restaurant where the owners/waitstaff speak your child's language--and just sit back and revel in the conversation that will flow and the delight you will see in the native speakers as they talk with your child. You will be so proud of how much your child has learned.

Tammy, you are in for a treat!  That is such a beautiful part of the country.  I agree with Debbie that 17 Mile Drive is a must.  You pay a fee of about $10 but it is so worth it.  Once you are in Carmel, there is a very pretty beach at the end of Ocean Avenue where locals bring their dogs. Our family has been a couple of times and we bring a picnic lunch.  Tommy's Wok in Carmel is really good Chinese food but crowded!  The aquarium in Monterey is amazing and well worth the price of admission.  They do offer some sort of military discount and also have a great restaurant that you can see the otters and sea lions play while you eat.  Have fun and enjoy your son!

My son just bought a car Saturday!!  He is in heaven now! Freedom!! hahaha.  Yesterday he drove 73 miles to go to a Persian restaraunt! So happy for him. The problem he's going to run into is getting to the DMV. It's not like he can take a day off and get all the paperwork taken care of like we can!!

@Tammy, enjoy your visit with your son- I have NO advice to give bc I haven't made it up there yet!!

My e-mail got changed and i lost track of everyone on this forum a few months ago. My son has been in Monterey since October 9, 2011. I left Indiana this morning and am driving my son's car to him. I should get to Monterey by noon on Thursday. Have any of you visited Monterey? What sights were the best? Restaurants? Etc. I will be able to visit with my son over the weekend and will fly out Sunday night. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
