I set up a "fare tracker" or "fare alert" in both Expedia and Travelocity for the several itineraries I am interested in, i.e. my home city to MRY, SJC, SFO, and now HNL. I have them set up to alert me by email when the fare drops by $50. I leave these set up all the time so I get a sense for what a good fare is when I want to actually travel. That way, I can act fast when a really good fare come along, because sometime they are sold out in a few hours. I also set up fare tracker itineraries for the reverse--MRY, etc. to home--so I can help provide good information to my sailor when he makes plans for his leave.

Before I click "buy" I usually do a quick Hotwire or Priceline search to make sure I haven't missed something.

Another hint is to set up frequent flyer accounts ahead of time so he/she gets credit for the flights to/from boot camp, A school, etc. Or, tell your sailor to set up a FF account right at the ticketing desk before boarding.

H.R.2456 107th Congress (signed into law 28 Dec 2001) provided the change that allows federal employees to keep their miles, for anyone wanting to double-check this.

I always go through priceline... checking every Tuesday around 3pm (best time for scheduling flights) about a month before I plan on flying out there. In fact I am flying out there this upcoming Wednesday, I am so excited to go because I will be arriving/surprising him for his birthday!! I was originally supposed to go out this weekend for the 4 day weekend, but some scheduling conflicts with school happened on my end, but I look at it as a blessing in disguise... I now get to go out for his actual birthday and stay an extra day! My boyfriend has been out there since August and this will be my fourth trip out there, I am from Fort Lauderdale, Fl so I have a long trip to go and a couple of tests to get out of the way on Monday and Tuesday before I can really get in the mood. Lol. Like I was saying, I always find priceline to have the best prices... the trip I will be taking in a few days I purchased 2 weeks ago for 288!!!!!!!

We got great fares right into Monterey (airport code MRY). The airport is tiny, like 3 gates, rental cars are about 10 steps from the desk, and DLI is just a couple of miles away. So convenient.

Closest airport would be San Jose, with Oakland another possibility, depending on airline.  We had a great flight with Southwest Air Oakland to Midway. Drive from San Jose to DLI would be about 1 1/2 hours, give or take.

My daughter told me they aren't allowed to take any pictures there at all.  Bummer, because what she has been describing to me sounds like paradise.  I love how there seem to be deer everywhere.

What is the closest airport to Monterey?

Debbie - That's a bummer!  Oh well - I'll have to describe it really well then :)

What travel services  have cheap flights to or around Monterey?

Hi CTI moms!  I haven't been on here for a bit!  Welcome to all the new CTI's!  That's so exciting!  I'm heading up to Monterey this weekend to see my sailor!  I can't wait.  We are staying at the Navy Lodge.  I'll take some pictures of the school and barracks and post them so we can see where are kids are every day :)

Have a GREAT weekend!
