My sailor left on Saturday afternoon. Some left first thing in the morning on Saturday. But they drop them all off at the airport around 4 am, regardless of what time they fly out. You'll be able to find your sailor at the USO. Then go with your sailor to the ticket counter and get a pass to go to the gate to wait with him/her. They alow the family members of active duty in uniform to go through security and wait at the gate.

Do they leave out of O'Hare?

It does depend on each recruit, but we allowed ourselves time the day after graduation and we spent that time with our son in the airport. He had 11 hours there to wait for his flight. They drop them off way too early but it gave us extra time together!

My sailor graduated on Friday and had a 9 am flight out on Saturday. I went very early to the airport and met him at the USO. We went into the chapel nearby and spent a couple of hours in quiet conversation.

I also took that opportunity to give him his cell phone, camera, etc. It was fine to do because he was off the base by then.

It all depends on the flight they get assigned.

Does anyone know how long the kids are in Great Lakes after boot camp graduation before they leave for Monterey?

Comment by Smom on January 3, 2012 at 10:19pm
My son said his break is in July. It must depend on when their classes started and how long they are in school for. We went out to visit him in October over a weekend. Even though he had watch on Saturday for a few hours we had a great time.

Lisa,  I will keep you posted about a future trip to Monterey which will probably be this summer.  It would be fun to connect in person!  I got to meet your son briefly on Skype.  He stopped by my son's room to talk about an outing somewhere while we were chatting.  So glad our sailors are friends!

Oh! That makes sense. I guess I misunderstood him!  hee hee.

My son gets a break in April supposedly but he said his class, as a whole, decides how long the break will be. (???).

At this point, I'm guessing on when they will have a 4 day weekend. Our son is checking on that. I'm wondering when his graduation will be happening.
