My guy starts classes this week, too. NavyLDO.  Ironically, my husband was a nuke submariner for ten years.  If he had stayed in, he would be right at 20 years.  So you guys were definitely serving at the same time.  It certainly is a small Navy world, isn't it?  My son got surprised with a last-minute change in language and class start time.  He's not thrilled but has a good attitude about it. He's just happy to be there.

This forum has great info!  I'm actually an active duty (29+ years) Navy Dad.  Son is at DLI commencing class this week.  Ideally (don't like the word "hopefully"), he'll be graduating in about 64 weeks.  I'm humble enough to admit that I have minimal experience with the CTI world, I'm a Nuke and a Submariner!  Thank you all so much for your support and the service of your Sailors!

Just found out my son is going to be a CTI - going to Monterey...I know NOTHING about what they do, so I'm here to learn :)

Thanks Dee, I figured time off while school was "in session" was not an option but wasn't sure what other breaks were available.

Big congrats to your son on his DLPT testing results!  I love reading how things on the other side of DLI work.

Wonderful news about your son's DLPT, Dee.  Please tell him all us CTI moms give him a Bravo Zulu.

Our family is headed to Monterey for the Chrismas holiday as our son is reluctant to use up his leave.  He is "saving" for time off over spring break or in the summer.  What are the DLI breaks other than holidays?  Will there be an opportunity to take a week or two off at another time?

Don't fret, KC's mom.  Each family is different.  And my guy is coming all the way to VA.  His ticket was $700, so I didn't want him to have to buy it himself.  That's almost half a month's pay for these kids.  Plus, he asked that it be part of his Christmas gift.  I'm sure your son will understand if he can afford it more so than you.  You're a good mom.  Don't worry.

Am I a bad mom? I just assume my son will buy the tickets? He probably has more money at this point than I do!! Oh no?? I don't want him to get wind that other moms are buying the tickets!! Maybe I should offer to pay 1 way?

I suggest you set up an Expedia and Travelocity "fare watcher." You plug in the routes you are interested in (home airport to Monterey, San Jose, and San Francisco) and watch the fares. These sites will email you when the fare drops by an amount you pre-set ($25, $50, $100). When you get an email with a fare and schedule you like, you have to jump on it, because the cheap fares sell out fast. Our fare last week to Monterey was $238 from Minneapolis. Last summer I paid $258 each for the whole family to go visit. Usually the fare is more than $500 from here.

The Monterey airport is very convenient. It is tiny, with about 3 gates, so security is quick, parking is easy, traffic is non-existent, the rental cars are steps from the counter,  and it is just minutes from the Presidio. My son has shown up there 20 minutes before departure time and has made his flight with time to spare.

Thanks, Debbie.  That's good to know.  I was just checking Monterey, because I didn't want my son to have to worry about getting to San Fran.  Prices most definitely were better in and out of San Fran, though.  Next time he flies home, I'll make sure we book out of a bigger airport.  At this point, I'm just glad I've got a ticket and he's coming home.
