Does anyone know how the reception is for Sprint?  My son will arrive on Saturday. I'd like to keep him on my family plan for as long as possible.

lisab4, When my son signed his contract for CTI, he had to sign something saying he was willing to do sub duty and to fly.  Male CTIs can be aboard subs for short periods of time, as the needs of the Navy dictate.

Metro PCS down on Lighthouse Drive a couple of blocks from the Presidio has a very reasonable unlimited voice/data/text plan that works great. Talked to my sailor for 2 hours yesterday from his room. Never a problem.

Your son will be doing sub duty? I wasn't aware that CTI's did that. Was he able to use a cell phone at Monterrey? We have heard that it is a dead zone.

Our son just arrived last Sunday. And advice/info  that us parents should know?

We are preparing our trip for our son's graduation from DLI. Have been to Monterey to visit before, so that part is a known.

I just don't know about graduation--time of day, Soldiers' Field? our name on guest list at gate? car on base without huge hassle? camera at graduation? length of ceremony? number of graduates? amount of pomp and ceremony? We fly in late the evening before, so we won't have much time to figure things out once we get there. Our sailor is buried in work these final weeks, so I'd rather not ask him to dig up the details.

From N4M information, I felt so well-prepared to go to PIR in Great Lakes. Hard to believe that was 22 months ago. I am so proud of my sailor and all he has accomplished. His OPI is tomorrow and DLPT a while later.

So, I would be grateful if any of you could share insights on how the graduation works.

For you moms with new CTIs, this day looks so far down the road. I felt the same way, but here we are! Our children put in so much work in order to achieve this goal. When they finish, they are so proud of themselves--and that carries them farther than our pride in them.

If any moms can comment on CTI life with submarine duty, I'd appreciate that information as well. There is a sub moms group, but most of what is exchanged there just does not apply to our sailors.

Thanks, as always, for providing good counsel.

Yup, spelling bee was in his new language. There were only 7 people in the class but I'm so proud b/c they are 7 of the smartest people in the military. 2 marines, 2 airmen, 1 soldier and 1 other sailor. I love how they get to take class with all of the other branches. I don't even know if he realizes just how lucky he is to have such a great variety as opposed to maybe just peers of the same level. I know he has an E 6 in his class. Many of his classmates have been in the service for several years.

So cool, spelling bees in the Navy! My son was always on Spell Bowl teams and academic competitions. He loves that kind of thing. He's been at DLI for almost a week and I don't think I've ever seen him happier... He loves the base... He loves the fact that it is on a nature preserve. I don't know if it's because BC has humbled him so much or what, but he doesnt even complain about the cleaning and ironing... Sometimes when I talk to him I wonder where my son went. I think all the changes are for the better. He is starting classes in the next couple of days.
I can't wait to visit him in Monterey! Maybe in the Spring??

KC'smom, love it!  Who knew we would be cheering spelling bees (albeit in a new language) again?  Can't wait until my son gets there...

My son won a spelling bee!!  hahahaha. They gave him a cool certificate. Never thought I'd be saying that now that he's 20... but wow, what a proud mom I am!
