My son is on his 2nd deployment. It's getting easier for me. He met a young woman at DLI, same language and they got married. She just broke up with him while he's been deployed- They are both assigned to the same base in Ga but he gets sent around a lot when he's not deployed ( Calif, Washington state etc) and then he deploys for about 5 months at a time. She said she could not deal with never having her husband at home. It's been devastating. I cried for days. DAYS. My son is devastated too of course. She actually gave him an ultimatum. She wanted him to leave his aircrew position and remain a land based CTI or it's over. I've been so upset I haven't been able to get on here and talk about it. But I guess that's what we're here for. He's serving in the middle east and she's home in a comfy house complaining because he's not there. She actually bought a house in their name while he was deployed and THEN broke up with him. It sucks. Now, he's homeless because when he returns to the states he has no home to go to. He doesn't want to step foot in the house - so he is going to stay on his friend's couch until he can get an apartment :-( Sorry for all the drama. That's my CTI son I'm so proud of and just knowing about his sadness breaks my heart.
Sorry to hear that MaryH. My dad who was in Navy Intel for 20 years explained to me that just because someone has a hard time with their language does not mean that they are any less smart or not capable of other equally as hard assignments. It just means that their brain is not cut out for THAT language. I hope he gets a job that he likes. I know several people in my son's class did not make it. His best friend attempted suicide AFTER passing. He barely made it through ( not one of the top students) and I think the stress of it hit him. I know this is a very stressful time for them.
Hi MomRN! Languages seem to be assigned based on the needs of the Navy, aptitude and, to a certain extent, your sailor's preference. I know my daughter went in wanting one language but was assigned another, more difficult language. She did just fine... From what I understand, Sailors are not reassigned languages, they work very hard at the language they will be assigned, there are study groups, and tutors to help. If they do not succeed, it is my understanding that they get reassigned another rate (job) and are transferred to another A school. Don't worry, Mom, the Navy has been doing this for awhile, and are pretty good at assigning sailors languages, that may prove to be a challenge, they can succeed. The DLI (Defense Language Institute) is a wonderful place with staff that truly want your sailor to succeed.
where does anyone recommend staying while visiting their sailor at DLI? we're looking into visiting next year sometime and are planning now...thanks for any advice.
Hi to everyone, my daughter has been in Monterey for 3 weeks, and is just now starting classes.
Tell him to hang in their Mary....and use all available resources they offer. My son had a problem at one point and his teachers were eager to help him. He graduated one of the top of his class.
Haven't been on here in a while. My son is getting ready to deploy again. Any one new or old on here with kids deploying? This is his 2nd deployment. Oh, on a side note, my son studied a 2nd language on his own - a similar language to one he learned, took a test on i and passed 3/3? I remember two 3's .... but anyway, it got him an extra $400 month pay!!! Yaaaahoooooooo!!
