Thanks, Lisa, do you recall where you stayed? Or where you went out to eat? Do I have to park on the "base" if I rent a car? Or, do people park off base and walk....I think that if I have my driver's license, his division number, and my rental car papers I should be ok parking on base, right?
Susan, It is a good idea to get a hotel near the hotel on Friday night, like you said. You'll have to have him back to base early in the evening. And trust me when I tell you, you'll get him back even earlier than he needs to be. They are so paranoid of not making it back in time, that most of them want to go back a couple hours before they're required to. Then he'll be on a bus to the airport at 0-dark-30 Saturday morning. If you want to maximize your time with him at the airport, staying close to the airport on Friday night will mean you don't have to get up at 4:00 a.m. He will not know when his flight is scheduled until likely the day of graduation.
Dee: I might do that. Michael tells me that he is part of a very varied group; recruits from Vietnam and Africa....they might not all have moms writing to them. I told him that he had 3 valentines coming and he told me I should NOT have done that; he thinks he will be singled out for ridicule! (I would think other moms and girlfriends would have sent valentines!) We did get to talk today; he was given a phone card with 400 minutes on it. He sounds like he is being well fed. But that it is very cold there....piles of snow everywhere and in the 20's.He passed his "swim test" yesterday. I asked if there were other CTI's and he said only one other....there had been two, but one of them was sick all the time, and was sent home...I guess there are performance expectations that they have to meet, as in any other job!
Does anyone know what, if any, type of break the kids get for Easter At DLI? I am trying to make plans to visit her during that time, but only if she'll have some time off.
And Michael's grandad on my husband's side (my husband's father) was in the Navy during the Korean War....he was over in Korea, going up little rivers and tributaries in Korea on a smaller boat.
Just realized my bootcamp story only made sense to me - the RDC was messing with her - they know the CT group consists of the nerds just as much as the nukes - they told her she would have to pass the swim test at DLI - I finally reasoned with her when she called, telling her that the DLI did not have a swimming pool and a lot of CTIs did not even have to spend time on a ship!
Ah, the CTI bootcamp stories! My CTI's first call home (other than the security calls) she cried because they told her that CTIs had a special swim test (she was a lifeguard during her high school years) and she had failed! She was sure she would not be able to be a CTI, despite an extraordinary score on the DLAB and a bachelor's degree in linguistics! They are the nerds of the Navy, but from what I understand, they all LOVE the DLI. Mine has been there since the end of April, classed up in the middle of May and is now preparing for her full immersion experience... She will be graduating in the fall of this year. She loves Monterey, but misses snow (go figure) and she LOVES the Navy! She was a bit older entering the Navy, but this is what she wanted, using her linguistics and language degrees for something other than teaching. Your son will do fine, Susan, they have tutors and study halls, and do everything they can for those that are really trying! Please try and make it to the airport after PIR, it is a wonderful last chance to spend time with your sailor, give him the tools (laptop, cell phone) he needs to keep in touch with you, and just marvel in their feeling of accomplishment and excitement for their new adventure!
Hello, my daughter just had PIR on Friday the 7th and left for Monterey early Sat morning. It's been so much easier on me since she has her phone, she can call, txt, face time and snap chat with me. It's so great because we can chat anytime she is avail. I've talked to her everyday! Sure I miss her but it's not nearly as hard as when she was in basic. Looking forward to hearing about her travels. Thus far she is loving it, keeping my fingers crossed that this continues to be the case!
