Comment by Susan, Michael's mom on February 10, 2014 at 12:20am

Hi, I am Susan, and I am new to this forum. My son, Michael, just completed his P days at GL this past week, and tomorrow begins the first week of real training for him. He signed a contract to become a CT-Interpretive, and go to A school in Monterrey after he completes basic training. We are proud of him. This is something he has done on his own, without much input from my husband and me. I am certainly going to try to make it to his graduation, sometime toward the end of March, I believe. But, my question for this group involves their personal electronics. It sounds like most of you make sure your sailors get their cell phones, lap tops, and IPADS back into their possession before they board the plane to Monterrey. But, I am wondering if the school or the Navy does not give them lap tops/IPADS as well? I am questioning this, as I am not sure what type of language materials the school in Monterrey uses, and if they would be ok with those materials going on personal IPADS/laptops, etc? Any knowledge about this? Can I bring his things to PIR review? Can I give them to him there w/o having to follow him to the airport? Any suggestions/insights you can give would be helpful....you guys seem like a great group of moms!

Haven't been in this group for a while. The desert where my son is deployed even has a moms page. It's so interesting to listen to the other moms - My son officially finished his training last week. I thought he was finished when he deployed- turns out he still had more on the job training in the airplane. I think he said it was 2 years 8 months, 18 days. He's now a ' special operator' and earned wings?? Something like that. He likes the flights but apparently they are 13 hour days. I hope it's safe. I'm hoping he gets to come home after just 6 months there. I miss him :-(. ( ha! Not that I get to see him when he's in the states either, though!)

After graduation from DLI how do they ship your car out of the continental U.S.?

Reid's Ma Thank you for the information. I try to be proactive.

First things first, you have to get in the Post gate with your military personnel. We went to morning muster at 7:30a.--he wanted us to do that. Parking for grad is on a street with quite a hill behind the Theater. Since there may be more than one grad scheduled in a day, we waited for the Theater to clear before being allowed in. It's about the size of a small town theater--and that old! I suggest that you try to sit on the left side of the seating bc you will be told to stand on the wall to take photos of your graduate. The grads sit across the front rows--they have practiced exactly the short ceremony a day ahead. A few remarks by the officers, class leaders, then the grads, by rows, lie up on the right side wall and come to the stage and are awarded their certificates. If some have earned their AA in language studies, they make two trips to the stage. There is time for photos and meet and greet the teachers usually after the ceremony that lasts about 45 min. We had lots of fun talking to parents of Army, AF, Marines, Coast Guard. If you have more questions, ask again!

Can I just add ... I was very selfish last year when my son was getting ready to go to SERE! I didn't want him going there or to the water survival school ( you remember stories of sailors going into cardiac arrest there ). I was on this site in chat rooms of aircrew moms boo hoo-ing my brains out. I was pathetic. Oh Lord!

Gosh KC'smom, I so love and admire your son's great attitude about it. It's amazing. I personally and honestly selfishly enough was glad J did not go Aircrew and didn't go to SERE's. I just can't stand no one beating and torturing my Baby, how awful am I! As for the 7'X7' CONEX, as we called them, yeah it's great when you get your won personal space. Unlike the days of the huge GP medium tent's were you had an entire team, guys and girl sleep in the tent. I know he will love the experience and the challenge, sounds like he has a great mature attitude about it. God bless him and may he have a great career in our US Navy. So proud of all our sailors, and this is coming from a retired Army Veteran :)

NYRican - mine graduated DLI Sept 2012. And had been in 18 months by that time & just finished up his last training in October so yea he spent half of his time in school!! First deployment - he says it's not bad. He lives in a box! Haha! About 7' X 7'. but he gets it to himself, so that's pretty cool. He just got married to his DLI classmate a few months ago but she is not being deployed as far as we know. Only 1 other ( Navy ) classmate got orders to deploy ( ship or sub I can't remember ) but he hasn't actually deployed yet either. My boy is the first one to go. He was excited. I never really know how he really feels about the places or schools he goes to bc he always tells me how fun & great they are. Even SERE school was "fun" according to him & he came out of there looking like a concentration camp victim. He lost 14lbs in a week & said "oh, I needed to go on a diet anyway". Which of course wasn't true. Oh well. It's all good. I hope he stays safe & comes home in 6 months!!
