The Airbus Shuttle is a great idea! There is a $400 difference in price for round-trip tickets between leaving from Monterey and leaving from San Francisco! I agree momkaw151, it is quite an experience they are getting! Not sure what to expect if/when the government shuts down and they don't pay civilian workers - wonder if their classes will be cancelled...

Oh that is great news.  I wanted my son to fly out of San Jose but I wasnt' sure how we would get him there!!  thanks for the tip!

Hi guys, My son just got to come home a couple of times in the last 2 weeks and we used the Monterey Airbus Shuttle to get him to and from the airport.  It was $70 RT, which is significantly cheaper than flying out of Monterey.  It picks them up downtown and transport them to San Jose or San Francisco.  He made to his flight and back to base both times without any problem.  I didn't hear any complaints.  Check it out.  Our Sailors are all very close on their timeline at DLI.  It has been quite a ride for my son, but he loves his language.

I have sent you a friend request - our children probably have very much in common. As a family, we have been to Monterey a couple of times when our children were young. I have never been to the base, but have done the "tourist" things such as the aquarium, cannery row, etc. We have told our daughter that she is the tour guide this time and are looking forward to seeing her "home" from her eyes - including all of her favorite restaurants! I hadn't even thought of Groupon - I think I am just so excited to see her, the few hours we had after BC was just not enough, it has been a Long seven months!

How exciting for you and your family!  Is this the first time that you've been to Monterey?  Are you a member of Groupon?  I am and found a few different deals to use while I was visiting there.  Restaruants and stuff life that.  The place is BEAUTIFUL, you should drive down the coast on Rt1 and/or do 17 mile drive.  I must have taken hundreds of pictures while I was there!!  He started school in March and will graduate next July.  It amazes me how much he has grown over the last 10 months since he last walked out my front door.

We will be visiting our daughter for the first time in a couple of weeks and I am sooo very excited to see her. We will be driving, but I will definitely take your advice and check into the other airports. I wish we could be there for Thanksgiving also, but that will not be possible, so Christmas break will be all the more special! How much longer will your son be in Monterey? Mine has another year left, so I hope to have a few more opportunities to visit her. And, yes, you should be so proud of your son - it is a difficult, but rewarding course in life, and demonstrates maturity beyond his years!

Comment by NavyDaughter/Mom on September 26, 2013 at 8:44am

I've been blessed with the opportunity to be to Monterey 3 times since my son has been there....and I just made plans to be there for Thanksgiving.  San Jose airport is very easy to get to from Monterey and it's on 1 1/2 hours, San Fransisco is closer to 3 hours away from Monterey.  I checked the rates for both airports and there is a difference, but not that big of one, so I've chosen to use Monterey so far.  And you're right...we are blessed. I would love to have my son back home, but I am so incredibly proud of what he has decided to do with his life!!
