My son rented his very first house in Georgia a few months ago just a few miles from the base- not familiar with that area of course. The traffic was heavy, he saw drug deals going on in the house across the street, his neighbor would come over & ask for money, his packages were stolen off his porch & they came home to a bullet hole in his new bride's car!!! It was awful! They just broke the lease- will probably lose thousands of dollars b/c of doing that but - just moved several miles away & are now in a safe ( more expensive ) house. He is about to deploy & couldn't leave his new wife alone for 6 months in that house/neighborhood!! I mean really? a bullet hole in her car??? The moral I suppose is if its cheap.... There's a reason!!!

I grew up around Ft Meade & both my parents worked there. I still live 1 mile from the base. A lot of the military people around here live in Odenton. It's actually a nice area. Gambrills, Millersville & Hanover, are within a few miles. Annapolis, home of the naval academy, is pretty but traffic is heavy & 18-24 mile drive.

Reid's single and has a car so driving a short distance from work is not a problem. Can you name some additional areas to look at? (Right now he lives in Pacific Grove and drives to DLI--about 10 minutes). He's saying he'll have 30 days to drive xcountry and find a place to live. Thanks, will pass the info.

There are luxury apartments literally right down the road from Ft. Meade (1-3 miles) that a lot of our military families move in to. They are good but expensive. It's just the row homes they need to stay away from but 1 visit there & they will see right away. There is also military housing off base right across the street from a main entrance to the base.

KC'smom, now that was NOT a coincidence! How miraculous is it to happen on to a MC Aircrew CTI!  Best wishes to your son.

Do you happen to know where this one should or should not look for an apt around Ft. Meade?

For a year now, I've been trying to find a mom familiar with CTI Aircrew. No luck. Well yesterday at work one of my patients saw the picture of my son that I keep with me at all times ( yeah, sorry ). She got excited & said " go navy!" Turns out she was a CTI Aircrew, Master Chief at that. I was so happy to talk to her. She really comforted me. He leaves for Washington state soon to get practice on his plane & then deploys for 6 months. This will be a first for me. ( and him ).

Hi Ladies! For anyone who has a son or daughter going to NIOC Georgia in Augusta, GA, one resource if you would like information about the area is our Ombudsmen. We just started a website, which is located here: https://sites.google.com/site/niocgao/home. If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a line.
