Michele_Ava, my son lives in Pacific Grove in an apartment attached to a nice couples house. He really likes the area. He found it in the newspaper classifieds. It's a 10 min. far drive to DLI. Though he's single, a friend with children also found a house for rent. Good luck!
Hi!
Does anyone here have a Sailor who will be/is living on their own out there in Monterey yet? My husband graduated from boot camp on July 12th and was flown out to Monterey to the DLI the very next day. I'm his wife and we have two young children ages 3 and 1. We're so ready to be out there with him! Does anyone here know anything about the housing out there? We're on a wait list for a house in the Fort Ord community but we're also open to renting off base if that would be quicker. Any help or info would be appreciated!
Oh my...I went back through and was reading older comments on here just to get a feel for people's experiences. It kind of got me worried. I know my sailor hasn't started her actual language classes yet and right now she's loving being out there but now I'm worried. She scored well on the DLAB and she's very bright and has a great aptitude for language...but now I wonder if I should talk to her NOW and remind her to utilize all of the services offered such as tutors, etc, at the first sign of a problem (if she has any difficulties). Do any of you think that is a good or bad idea? I just want to make sure she is prepared and make sure she knows that its ok to ask for help...
Well my daughter has been at DLI since the 13th and so far she's loving it which is a huge relief for me. Now I'm looking forward to traveling out there for a visit around Christmas.
Do they get to keep the Ipads and Macbooks, or are they just loaned until the classes are over?
Thanks, momkaw1513. I will definitely check out Master Chief Bailey's info.
Ambi and Amy- My son has been at DLI since January. He really loves the challenge that this school is giving him. He has had some challenging roommates, but that is life. I reminded him that it makes siblings look like a breeze:) He has now moved to the other barracks (finally).
Back in April, around the 15th Master Chief Bailey from the school posted some great information for Mom's. It is a great overview of the program and the support that is available to our sailors. I wish I had seen it before our trip to see him the week previous. His log in is CTIMC...something like that. From a mother's perspective, it was great to know that someone like this man is working with my son.
If you get a chance, visit Monterrey. It is an amazing area!! I can't wait to go back. Good luck to your sailor's.
Amy-Jordie's Mom--My son has been there since June 8, and is extremely happy!! We don't hear from him unless we call or text. He is staying busy and seeing all the sites on weekends. I am happy he is happy, but miss him calling!! He started his classes today, so things will definitely change for him. Keep me informed as she settles in.
My daughter arrived at DLI Saturday night. I talked to her yesterday and she's seems to be settling in well so far. Anyone else have a sailor that is new to the DLI?
