Sailor Moon,
The NIOC at Fort Meade has a lot of resources available to assist you before you make your move to Maryland. Fort Meade was my first duy assignment as a young E3 CTI, it was very daunting for my wife and I, so I understand. Things are much better now as far as support services go. Here are a few....
Fleet and Family Support Center
Ft Meade Housing Referal Office
The F&FSC and the Ombudsmen are Navy entities and are there specifically to help you in your transition.
There appears to be a large quantity of on-post housing available and nearby housing on the community that participates in the "set aside" program (they agree to not charge you more than your BAH rate).
All the best!
Loren
Okay, my niece lives in a 2 bdrm apt. with cathedral ceiling and fireplace for $1300/mo approx 10 miles off base. My other friend is renting a townhome 2 miles off base for $1500/mo. I don't know of anything for $900 or even $1000 unfortunately. I wonder if the housing allowance is higher maybe? 2 towns just outside Ft Meade that a LOT of the military live in are Severn and Odenton. In case that helps with your searching.
that's a big help. I'll hold on to this and pass it along when he needs it. thanks K'smom.
Just around Ft. Meade, are brand new apts that are very pricey. Anywhere from $1700-$2000/month. Some older/ cheaper ones are around Ft. Meade. For example, Odenton is just down the road and my friend rents a 2 bdrm for $1300/mo. 10 miles away in Elkridge my friend rents for $1500/mo ( 2bdrm). My niece has a 2 bdrm apt. approx. 10 miles away for I think $1200 ( it has a fireplace, too). I almost think it is just as easy to rent a townhouse for the same amt. There are some very nice townhomes around Ft. Meade. My girlfriend is renting hers out for $1200. If you find a cheap townhome- don't do it!! there are some bad areas VERY close to Ft. Meade where you do NOT want to go. If the townhome seems cheap, there is a reason. Hope that helps.
