KYKathryn - My son, his wife & their girls live in military housing in Seaside. We were there for Christmas & stayed with them. Housing are townhouse type duplexes. 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, detached 2 car garages. We drove around Monterey, the Post Grad. School etc. Traffic wasn't too bad in the middle of the day so early morning shouldn't be bad. This particular housing area does use up all their BAH though which my son was disappointed about because he too likes putting a little away each month. Also, make sure you check into the cable/satellite/internet situation. Good luck!
@ctvadim - Is the traffic bad in Monterey proper? I am really worried about his commuting time. I will most likely work part time in the surrounding area but he is the one who has to be up before sunrise.
Sorry for the confusion -- This would be housing for the two of us once we are married and I move there. I finally received something from Parks at Monterey (Fort Ord housing) and it's basically all the BAH but all/most utilities included and we are able to bring our 3 pets. I've been looking all over Seaside & Marina so it will be up to him how much of BAH he wants to hang on to. He is so excited about pocketing some money :P
(I'm currently a CTI, so here you go. :D) 1) No off-base until he's legally married. Once he's married, he can move off-base; however, keep in mind that since Ft. Ord is Military housing, they take 100% BAH unless you have a roommate to split it with.
I'd recommend somewhere close to DLI (I lived just outside of Naval Postgraduate School); the traffic can be a little hairy in the mornings.
If he is married, then after he classes up he can live off base. A couple of my daughters friend do but she said the apartments are not that great. One couple rented a nice house in Marina.
Unless he is married, I don't think he has the option of living off base. My daughter has been there since June and lives in the older building. She settled on it when they moved out of the temporary barricks after they classed up so that she could room with the folks she wanted to. The newer buildings are nicer and have kitchettes. It's not fancy but is equivelant to most college dorms.
Hey moms (and everyone else!), I am just wondering what feedback you might have on living in Monterey. My CTI is almost out of bootcamp so our talks are getting a little more serious on where to move. It seems he has gotten it in his head up there that the on-base Fort Ord housing isn't really up to snuff... any thoughts on this? Personally, I was thinking it would be a great & really easy option. I think he wants to save money and doesn't realize what little the BAH will get us. Coming from Houston, we could basically rent a large house for the same price :P
Sorry Lisa, I thought I was on the PIR site. My son just got to DLI, will start his schooling on Thursday. Very excited for him. I hear Monterey is lovely. I look forward to all of your reports.
