Lili ship, sounds like our guys will be graduating together.  Thanks beckmcs, I checked out their website and it looks lovely!  Hotels are so much cheaper in Monterey than I thought they would be.

Lisa, we have stayed in a few of the local hotels and the best we have found is the Hotel Pacific.  It is right on the edge of old downtown Monterey and very close to the Presidio.  It is nice but nothing fancy.  All of the rooms have fire places and parking is underground and convenient.  I was told to ask for off street rooms to avoid traffic noise.

Luckily, his graduation from recruit training occurred well over a year a go.  He's graduating from DLI soon, so I was asking about hotels in the Monterey area.  Thanks.

Westayed at the Ramada in Waukegan. They have a shuttle to graduation and a meet and greet. Nice breakfast early just for the families there for grad...It was just fine.

Graduation is close enough to make flight and hotel plans now.  I am very excited.  Any hotel suggestions?  I don't particularly want to stay at Navy Lodge (spent too many nights at those when my husband was in the Navy).

Hi Debbie, yeah, you describe Augusta pretty well, it is a lot like here in San Antonio, except even more rural. I'm born and raised in NYC so I consider that extreme city living and then I got stationed in San Antonio and totally saw this as rural, country when it really isn't, but when one starts off in NYC then everything else seems rural like. I totally saw this as John Wayne county and then when I ventured off to other little cities here, my daughter called it chain saw massacre rural, lol. Everything is dependant. The extremely small airport there reminds me of Key West, Florida, where I was also stationed. I hated it because one had to drive hours just to get to mainland and see a mall. My son will like it there because it won't be such a shock for adjustment. He was born in Key West, and Monterey is just like Key west, in that it's a very small city, but at least not disconnected from civilization like Key West is. He will be alright, but to this city slicker, it a dead zone, hahaha

KC'smom- my son is in the same boat, if he gets stationed in MD he will be close to his dad who works at Bolling and lives in Waldorf. Augusta is kinda like a dead zone, nothing but the Golf gourse where the Master's takes place. They have to drive out over 2 hours or more to get anywhere for entertainment like a Braves baseball game or a Falcons Football game or concerts in Atlanta. Md is great but the cost of living there is ridiculous, and we are used to living pretty decent on middle class income here in San Antonio. I think he will be happy with whatever assignment he gets, although there are some slots for his skills here in San Antonio too. He would be pretty content being here, but I rather he were experiencing life somewhere else. I remember enlisting from Puerto Rico and getting stationed in San Antonio far from my family and having to grow up and become independant, and then even farther away in Panama. I appreciate those assignments and want something like that for my boy. We'll have to wait and see how it works out :-)

NYRican- I wish my son would be stationed at Ft Meade ( assuming that's where you were referring to in Md ). I live 1 mile from the base. Grew up there since my dad was in military intell & worked at NSA. So did my mother. The last place my son wants to be stationed is in his home town though so he would fight those orders real hard!!!

Hi Smom, OMG, what are the chances, lol. Yes my son fly's back tomorrow and I guess the next 3 weekes is dedicated to practicing for the test and doing repetitive work. He will test the last week of January and graduate the next week. I will be flying in and staying there until I depart with him on his drive to Georgia. I didn't want to leave him to make that drive all by himself. We will be stopping here in San Antonio cause he plans on taking a few weeks of leave before reporting in at the Base. Plus I think he plans to apply to what we call in the Army "hometown Recruiter", I forgot what he said it's called in the Navy. It's a plan where the sailor just checks in with the recruiter in the hometown and they don't get charged leave cause they are helping out the recruiter. We'll see if he gets it, if not then he will still be hanging around here on leave. Guess we'll meet up at graduation. I'm hoping to make reservation at the Naval Postgraduate since I love that place, just hoping they have available rooms. Happy New Year's Smom :-)

NYRican924 my son also returns tomorrow and graduates in early Feb. it's been quite the journey for him. He's had several friends and roommates not finish so he's been working hard to complete the program. I'm very proud of him. I'm looking forward to going to Monterey to see him graduate. I'm guessing our sailors are in the same class/language.
